Softball Bounce Tritons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team (31-18, 13-8 SSC) completed the series sweep over the Eckerd Tritons (5-37, 0-21 SSC) earlier today winning both ends of the Sunshine State Conference double-header 7-1 and 11-3. Head coach Shelly Lis also picked up her 200th career victory with the 11-3 win over the Tritons in the nightcap.

In the first game of the double-header, Barry took advantage of two Triton errors and plated two runs to take an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the fourth, the Buccaneers pounded out four hits and scored five runs, while Cristina DeTagle (Fr., North Miami Beach, Fla.) and Kim Fujimoto (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.) each picked up RBI singles to give Barry a 7-0 lead. The Tritons took advantage of a Buccaneer error in the fifth and managed to score one run, but Barry held on for the 7-1 win.

Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) went seven innings, gave up one unearned run and struck out 11 to improved to 17-10 on the year. Kristina Lemon (4-16) suffered the loss for Eckerd giving up seven unearned runs, six hits and struck out three.

In the nightcap, the Bucs scored early and often. The Buccaneers collected five hits and scored five times on Fujimoto's three-run homer and Samantha Zadel's (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) two-run jack to take a 5-0 lead after one inning. Barry added single runs in the second and third innings and added three more in the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. However, the Tritons picked up three runs on three hits in the top of the fifth to narrow the gap 10-3. Finally in the bottom of the fifth, DeTagle picked up an RBI single to score Ashley Loose (So., Mill Creek, Wash.) from third to give Barry the 11-3 eight-run mercy rule win after five innings.

Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) improved to 14-8 going three innings allowing just one hit and struck out four. Ali Perantoni (Fr., Miami, Fla.) hurled the final two innings and gave up three hits, three runs and struck out two. Amy McGathey (1-13) suffered the loss for the Tritons going just one third inning and giving up five runs on five hits. Jen Barnes went four innings, gave up eight hits, six runs (five earned), while striking out two.

DeTagle went six-of-eight at the plate with two RBI, scored four times and stole four bases to lead Barry. Delilah Stroup (Sr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) was five-of-eight and scored four times, while Fujimoto was three-of-six, with four RBI and added a home run. Zadel added four RBI and a home run, while Heather Hodges rounded out the Buccaneer top performers going three-of-five on the day with an RBI and three runs scored. McGathey, Kelly Folles and Stephanie Kramer each added single RBI's for the Tritons.

The Buccaneers will return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 27 at 5 pm hosting St. Thomas for the final home stand of the 2005 season. It will also be senior day as the Bucs will recognized the four seniors Hodges, Stroup, Erin Sutton (Parrish, Fla.) and Krista Latessa (Bradenton, Fla.)
