LIVINGSTON, Ala. -- After a rainout a day earlier, the Barry University softball (14-8) finally picked up a pair of wins defeating the West Alabama Tigers (9-4) today at the UWA Softball Complex. The Buccaneers won the opening game of the double-header 7-0 and the nightcap 10-0 in six innings.
In the first game,
Maile Keeney (So., Longwood, Fla.) went three-for-four at the plate and picked up an RBI, while
Erin Sutton (Parrish, Fla.) belted her second-career homer to lead the Bucs. Barry picked up two runs in the second inning, one in the third and added four more in the fifth in route to the 7-0 win. Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) got the win to improve to 9-5 on the year. In the game, she allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out eight. Casey Cockrum (7-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, walked eight and struck out six.
In the nightcap, Barry rolled the Tigers in six innings.
Kim Fujimoto (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.) collected three hits and Stroup picked up her fourth home run of the season and two RBI to lead Barry. The Buccaneers pounded out 12 hits over the six innings and scored one run in the first inning, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and added four more in the sixth in route of the 12-0 six inning win.
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) struck out nine, allowed three hits and walked two to improve to 5-3 for the year. Whitney Woodington (1-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers in the nightcap in just 3.2 innings of work and allowed four runs on seven hits, while striking out five.
Keeney finished four of seven at the plate and picked up two RBI to lead Barry on the day. Fujimoto, Stroup and freshman
Cristina DeTagle (North Miami, Fla.) each added three hits apiece. Sutton led the team with three RBI on the day, while Stroup and
Krista Latessa (Sr., Bradenton, Fla.) each added two RBI. Both Stroup and Sutton collected a home run each for Barry.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Wednesday, Mar. 9 in Arkadelphia, Ark. to face the host Henderson State Lady Reddies at 2 pm.
