MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Mailie Keeny (So., Longwood, Fla.) hit a two-run home run in the third inning to help lift the Barry University softball team (7-4, 3-1 SSC) to a 4-0 Sunshine State Conference win over the Nova Southeastern Knights (5-3, 3-1) earlier tonight at Buccaneer Field.
After giving up three early hits to the Knights, the Buccaneers showed signs of offensive life when
Delilah Stroup (Sr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) led off the third inning with a single and two batters later, Keeney blasted a line drive over the left field fence to give Barry an early 2-0 lead. In the fourth,
Heather Hodges (Sr., Clearwater, Fla.) led off with a single and
Erin Sutton (Sr., Parrish, Fla.) was hit by a pitch. Both later scored on
Kim Fujimoto's (Jr., Carmichael, Calif.) two-RBI single in the same inning to carry the Bucs to the 4-0 win.
Elizabeth Bennet (Jr., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) improved to 5-3 on the year securing the win for Barry. She pitched four innings allowed three hits, walked two and struck out two.
Ramie Garcia (Scottsdale, Ariz.) entered the game in the fifth inning hurled the final three innings, allowed one hit and struck out two to pick up her first save. Laura Cepicky (Fr., Waterloo, Ill.) fell to 3-2 suffering the loss for the Knights. She pitched four innings, gave up four runs, walked five and struck out five.
Hodges finished two-of-two at the plate with two singles to lead Barry, while Fujimoto and Keeney each added two RBI apiece.
Both teams will face each other again in the final two games of the SSC three-game series starting at 5 pm at Buccaneer Field.
