Box Score 2 MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—The Barry Buccaneers swept a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader from the second-ranked Rollins Tars 7-6 and 5-2 at Feinbloom Field on Saturday.
In the first game, the Bucs (23-14, 7-8 SSC) jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings and held off a furious Tars comeback for a 7-6 win.
Alex Meneses started rallies in the first and third innings, scoring twice, while
Keith Barton knocked in three runs, including a two-run homer in the third.
The Tars (32-6, 9-3 SSC) mounted a comeback in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on three hits and two Barry errors. Matt Gerber drove in two runs with a base hit.
Rollins tied the game with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Chris Munoz hit a lead-off homer in the seventh, while Garrett Preisser knocked in Luis Dieguez with a single in the eighth.
But in the bottom of the eighth,
Jerry Thornton walked and
Carlos de la Osa singled to start the frame, with de la Osa going to third and Thornton scoring on an error by right fielder Luis Dieguez. Meneses hit a sacrifice fly to right to score de la Osa and give Barry a 7-5 lead.
The Tars managed one run in the ninth, but
Jesse Naber shut the door to record his fourth save. Mike Davila (2-0) got the win in relief of starter
Robert Penna who 7.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk, while striking out six. Davila got out of the eighth, then gave way to Naber with two on in the ninth. Naber retired the side, allowing only one walk. Mario Lombardo (1-3) took the loss for Rollins. He tossed three innings, allowing three hits and two walks, leading to two runs (one earned) and struck out three.
In game two, Barry's
Alex Gonzalez (5-4) out-dueled Rollins' Eduardo Chile (4-2) to give the rubber game to the Bucs. The two pitchers traded goose eggs in the first two innings, but Rollins grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Tito Alfonso and a throwing error by Gonzalez.
The Bucs responded immediately, tying the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning. Meneses had an RBI double and Barton added a run-scoring single.
Barry salted the game away in the fifth. Menese walked and scored on a triple by
Brian Lima. Barton knocked in Lima with a single and
Cesar Aranguren plated Barton with a ground out.
Staked to the three-run lead, Gonzalez retired six of the next seven batters to clinch the win. He tossed a complete game, holding the Tars to five hits and three walks, two runs (one earned) and struck out seven. Chile took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in four innings. He struck out four.
The Bucs return to action on Tuesday night, hosting cross-town rival St. Thomas at 6:00 pm.
