Baseball Splits SSC Doubleheader With Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAINT LEO, Fla. -- The Barry University baseball team's bats came alive earlier this afternoon as they pounded out 22 hits splitting a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the Saint Leo Lions falling in the first game 8-5 and the winning the nightcap convincingly 16-8.

In the first game, the Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead through three innings. The Buccaneers tried to rally scoring a run in the fourth, two in the sixth, while Rey Fuentes added a two-run shot in the seventh, but it wasn't enough as the Lions held off a late Buccaneer surge 8-5.

Jonathan Sandola (3-2) took the loss for the Buccaneers after pitching three innings and giving up six runs, while striking out one. Cameron O'Connell (3-0) earned the win for the Lions hurling six innings while giving up three runs on five Buccaneer hits and three strikeouts.

Joey Apotheker paced the Bucs in game one going two-for-four with a double and an RBI. Rey Fuentes also added two RBI on the day.

In the nightcap, the Bucs took an early 1-0 lead in the first, however, the Lions bounced back in the bottom of the first scoring two runs to go ahead by one. The Bucs rallied in the next inning scoring four runs and never looked back. They continued their scoring in the fourth with two runs, scored six in the sixth including Alex Lorenzo's first career grand slam, and added three more in the seventh for a 16-8 convincing victory.

John Vinciguerra (3-2) earned the win for the Buccaneers after relieving starter Keith Hameister in the fourth. Vinciguerra hurled 3.1 innings giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits. Hameister pitched the first 3.2 innings and gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits, while striking out one. Josh Neitz (7-4) took the loss for the Lions after giving up seven runs (four earned) in 3.2 innings on eight Buccaneer hits and struck out three.

Adam Toro led the Bucs at the plate in game two going four-for-five and scoring three times, but Alex Lorenzo was the game savior going two-for-five hitting his first career grand slam, while also scoring three times and tallying a game-high five RBI. Chris Rodriguez also went two-for-five with four RBI in the nightcap.

The Bucs improved to 23-22 overall and 6-12 in the SSC, while the Lions closed out their season at 29-24 overall and 9-12 in the SSC. The Bucs will resume action on Monday, Apr. 29 hosting Lynn University in non-conference action at 6 p.m.
