Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--The Barry University women's soccer team smothered the Catawba College Indians 5-0 to win the title at the the Wingate Inn Labor Day Classic in Jacksonville, Fla. Monday afternoon.
The Bucs took a 1-0 lead to halftime thanks to an
Erika O'Brien goal at 41:10. Pam McDonald had the assist.
In the second half, it was all Barry as the Bucs got two goals from
Ashley Snell and one each from
Marie Gunnarsson and
Tammie Thornton.
Gunnarsson goal was assisted by keeper
Johanna Fischer who cleared the ball out to Gunnarsson who scored.
Fischer worked her third straight shutout and ran her scoreless streak to 336 minutes, despite not having to make a save. Kim Clayton kept the game from getting completely out of hand by making 12 saves for the Indians.
Gunnarsson was named the tournament MVP. She was joined on the All-Tournament team by teammates Fischer, McDonald and
Colleen Gramlich. North Florida was represented by Carrie Betten, Jenny Cadieu, Jill Vietch and Valerie McEvoy. Clayton, Jamie Fink and Jessica Parker made the squad from Catawba, while Texas A&M-Commerce had Cory Copeland, Janna Sandall and Zita Tiamuh.
Barry improves to 4-0-0 to start the season, while Catawba falls to 0-2-0. The Bucs, who haven't played at home yet, travel again next weekend to face the Argonauts of West Florida.
