Box Score ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The eighth ranked Barry University volleyball team survived a closed encounter with Eckerd College earlier this afternoon defeating the Tritons 3-2 in a Sunshine State Conference match-up.
As the game got underway, it appeared the Buccaneers would be sending the Eckerd fans home early winning the first two games, 30-26 and 30-15. In game three though, the Tritons mounted a comeback winning the next two, 30-23 and 30-27. However, it was the Buccaneers who came out on top in a decisive game five, 15-7.
Outside hitter,
Karla Bersano (6-1, So, Sao Paulo, Brazil) led the Buccaneer charge with 23 kills on 71 attempts. Bersano's 71 attempts places her fifth on the Buccaneer all-time single match high list just behind former Buccaneer All-American Mickisha Hurley.
Other leaders contributing to the Buccaneers' winning efforts were
Simone Ferrarezi (5-10, Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) with 18 kills and a team high 20 digs and
Tricia Stanton (5-11, Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) with 12 kills, a .407 hitting percentage, and five total blocks.
Delaney Mennell paced the Tritons with 15 kills on 55 attempts and Erin Johnson with a team high 23 defensive digs.
The Buccaneers improved to 12-2 overall and 3-1 in Sunshine State Conference play while the Tritons fell to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the SSC.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3 traveling to Boca Raton, Florida facing off with SSC opponent Lynn University at 7:00 p.m.
