Baseball Falls To Second-Ranked Tampa In Opener

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers had a lead early in their Sunshine State Conference series opener against the second-ranked Tampa Spartans, but fell 4-3 at the Tampa Baseball Field on Thursday Night.

  • B1 - Tampa jumped out in front on an RBI double by Jhoander Irigoyen after a walk to Brayden Wooburn in the first. | Tampa 1, Barry 0
  • T2 - Anthony Tralongo and Luca Mendez singled to lead off the second. Aidan Heffner stroked a double to right to score Tralongo with the tying run. Dyson Joseph delivered a two-run single to right to give the Bucs the lead. | Barry 3, Tampa 1
  • B2 - The Spartans got on run back in the second. Walker Vanecek doubled to lead off the frame and scored on an infield single by Luke Fikar. | Barry 3, Tampa 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Tobin Moran (2-0) worked three scoreless inning in relief to earn the win. He allowed one hit and one walk and struck out six.
  • Fikar, who started the game at second base, cam on to close the game out in the ninth and struck out all three batters he faced. 
  • Tyler Venegas (5-2) took the loss for Barry. He went six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks and struck out seven.
  • Tralongo and Zavier Hatfield each had two hits for the Bucs.
  • Woodburn and Jesse Ponce eac had two hits for Tampa.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs and Spartans play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 1:00 pm to close the regular season.
