Women’s Tennis Extends Streak with Fourth Straight Sweep Over Wayne State

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. --  The No. 3 Barry University women's tennis team defeated No. 41 Wayne State in dominant fashion, earning a 7–0 victory to secure the Bucs fourth consecutive sweep. With the win, Barry improves to 11-1 overall on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Barry secured the doubles point after winning the bottom two flights. Heimen and Anger defeated Arafat and Kayakent, 6–1, while Dema and Nikolova topped Uzcategui and Laynes, 6–2.
  • With the point already decided, the match between No. 15 Crespo and Lutringer versus Szpakowska and Beaulieu went unfinished, giving the Bucs a 1–0 lead heading into singles play.
  • In singles, Brun was the first off the court, delivering a dominant 6–0, 6–0 shutout victory over Laynes to extend the lead to 2–0.
  • Dema followed with a hard-fought win against Szpakowska, taking the first set in a tiebreaker, 7–6(2), before closing out the match 6–4 to put Barry one point away from clinching.
  • Michalitsch clinched the match for the Bucs with a 6–4, 6–3 win over Kayakent, giving Barry the decisive fourth point. 
  • Anger added to the lead shortly after, defeating Beaulieu 6–3, 7–5 on court four to make the score 5–0.
  • Nikolova continued the momentum with a 6–3, 6–4 victory against Uzcategui, pushing the score to 6–0.
  • The final point of the match came from No.36 Crespo, who upset No. 29 Arafat In a tightly contested battle, winning both sets in tiebreakers, 7–6(2), 7–6(5), to complete the 7–0 sweep for the Bucs.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs have swept Wayne State all three times they have played each other. 
  • In singles, both Michalitsch and Anger have not lost a match all spring season and are on an eight-match win streak.
  • Dema is also on a win streak of her own, winning her last seven matches. 
  • The doubles duo of Dema and Nikolova have yet to lose a match and are on a seven-match win streak. 

ON THE HORIZON

The Bucs will continue playing at home tomorrow, Tuesday, March. 17th in their third conference game of the season against Rollins at 2:00 pm.
