Historic Win Gets Men's Volleyball Back on Track

Barry defeats Manhattan for first win over NCAA DI opponent in program history

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- History continues to be made this season for the Barry Men's Volleyball team. On Saturday night, the Buccaneers took down Manhattan in four sets for their first win over an NCAA Division I program in history. The Jaspers are competing in their inaugural season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - The match got started with a power kill down the middle from Elias Fuhrer. Barry held as much as a four-point lead in the set. The Jaspers continued to chip away and finally flipped the scoreboard with six straight points to make it 20-18. After a 22-22 tie, Manhattan rallied for three straight points and closed out the first set with a block solo. MU hit .500 in the set with just one attacking error and 14 kills. | Manhattan 25, Barry 22
  • Set Two - Fuhrer once again got the first point for the Buccaneers in the set. Philip Tein held service on Barry's six-point run. The Bucs were able to hold that steady lead, as the offense swung a .333 clip and had 14 kills. The defense came alive and had five blocks after a zero block first. Zachary Jabr and Jacob Strnisa each had five kills in the set. Fuhrer and Jabr each had a hand in three of the blocks. | Barry 25, Manhattan 17
  • Set Three - With the match tied at a set a piece, both teams were battling to take the third set. The Jaspers held a five-point lead throughout the majority of the set and as late as 18-13. A 4-0 run brought it within one and gave the Bucs a fighting chance to flip the scoreboard. After trailing 21-19, Barry did just that running off three straight points with a service ace from Tein and two attack errors from the Jaspers. The Buccaneers closed out the set with a block from Jabr and Jeremy Ferreira. Both teams had 10 kills and hit sub-.100. | Barry 25, Manhattan 23
  • Set Four - With momentum and the set advantage, the match was destined for the Buccaneers. It was all Barry in the set, Manhattan tried having a late comeback fending off four match points, but it was too little too late. Ferreira closed out the match with the kill. The Jaspers had three more kills than Barry but four more attacking errors and two more service errors. Strnisa led in kills with four as, four other Bucs each had at least a pair or more of kills. | Barry 25, Manhattan 22

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Fuhrer tied a season high eight kills, without a single error swinging .500. He also had four block assists.
  • Joao Piazza Baumgartem set a career high in assists with 43, just the second ever 40-plus match, the first in just four sets.
  • He added 11 digs for his second career double-double.
  • Jacob Strnisa had his 14th 
  • Bobby Clapp had his seventh 10-plus dig match this season with 15.
  • Tein recorded four service aces for the most in a match in program history.
  • Jabr collected his seventh double-digit kill match this season with 13.
  • The team's 49 kills is fourth most in a match in program history.
