Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Cobras and Falcons

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers baseball team walked off an 4-3 win over the Coker Cobras in the first game of a split doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Feinbloom Field, but fell 18-11 to the Bentley Falcons in the second game.

GAME 1 SUMMARY:
Barry 4, Coker 3

  • T1 - The Cobras struck first in the opening inning. After two outs, Rocco Wojcik doubled to the fence in right field and Fabio Marquez and Gavin Johnson walked. Nicholas Badillo singled to shallow center to drive in Wojcik, but Buccaneer center fielder Zavier Hatfield hosed out Marquez at the plate to end the inning. | Coker 1, Barry 0
  •  B2 - Barry took the lead in the second. Blake Opie led off with his fifth homer of the season, clearing the batter's eye in center for the second time. Anthony Tralongo singled through the left side and, two outs later, Dyson Joseph drove him in with a double high off the wall in center. | Barry 2, Coker 1
  • T3 - The Cobras knotted up the game in the third. Wojcik reached on an error and later scored on a single by Johnson. | Barry 2, Coker 2
  • T6 - Coker took a lead in the sixth. Johnson singled to lead off, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Barak Boston. | Coker 3, Barry 2
  • B9 - The Bucs finally scratched across the tying run in the ninth against Cobra starter Casey Cleghorn, who threw 161 pitches in making it through nine innings. Cleghorn hit Lee-Anthony Santiago to lead off the inning, then he threw the ball away at second on a bunt by Joseph. After a successful bunt by Hatfield, Cleghorn hit Brady Blanks to load the bases and Jalen Smith drove in pinch runner Ben Rhode with the tying run. | Barry 3, Coker 3
  • B10 - With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Tralongo blasted a 1-1 pitch from reliever Cooper Mitchell to end the game. It was his first homer of the season. | Barry 4, Coker 3

NOTEWORTHY:

  • John Perozzi (2-0) worked the top of the 10th inning to get the win for the Bucs. He held the Cobras off the scoreboard, despite allowing two hits, including a double, in the inning.
  • Mitchell (0-1) took the loss for the Cobras. He allowed the one run on Tralongo's homer and recorded one strike out.
  • Tralongo and Opie each had two hits, including a homer, to lead Barry at the plate. 
  • Johnson led Coker with three hits, while Boston and Dimitri Sabino each had two.

GAME 2 SUMMARY:
Bentley 18, Barry 11

  • B6 - Barry broke open a scoreless game in the sixth inning, putting pressure on the Falcon defense with four bunts in the inning. Jalen Smith had a two-run double and Josh Hunglere added an RBI double of his own. | Barry 5, Bentley 0
  • B7 - Barry tacked on four more in the seventh. Brady Blanks had and RBI double and Blake Opie smashed a three-run homer. | Barry 9, Bentley 0
  • T8 - Bentley got back in the game with four runs on four hits including three doubles. | Barry 9, Bentley 4
  • B8 - Barry got two of the runs back in the bottom of the inning. Blanks had an RBI single and the Bucs scored on a ground out. | Barry 11, Bentley 4
  • T9 - The Falcons sent 17 men to the plate and scored 14 runs on five hits off five Buccaneer releivers in the ninth. | Bentley 18, Barry 11

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Dalton Williams (0-1) was hung with the loss. He hit one batter, walked another and allowed one single. All three runners came in to score.
  • The loss spoiled an brilliant start for Mason Blocker who shut the Falcons out for six innings on one hit and two walks. He struck out five.
  • Brandon Arsenault (1-0) worked 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, a hit batter and a walk.
  • Brady Blanks and Aramis Ramirez, Jr. each had three hits for the Bucs.
  • Smtih and Opie each drove in three runs.
  • Brendan Sencej went 3-for-5 with four RBI and Jared Bernandino went 2-for-5 with a homer and five RBI to pace the Falcons.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs host the Erskine Flying Fleet on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
