Volleyball Claims 1995 Title Rematch At Day One of UP North Tournament

ST. CLOUD, Minn.   Thursday afternoon's match to kick off the UP North Tournament marked the first time that Head Coach, Leonid Yelin, played against the school he won a national championship against 30 years ago, Northern Michigan. The outcome remained the same with the Barry Buccaneer Volleyball team coming out on top, this time in a sweep 3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Northern Michigan scored the first point of the match. Both teams traded points back and forth until Barry had a 6-0 run to gain space. Ava Ross collected her first career service ace in her first attempt. Sofya Sinkova and Veronika Eremeeva closed out the run with back to back kills and make it 15-9. The lead would hold for the remainder of the set as the Bucs took a 1-0 match lead. Barry had 15 kills with just three attacking errors, swinging .364. | Barry 25, NMU 21
  • Set Two - The Wildcats earned the first point of the set once again. Barry went on three separate 4-0 runs that would help them power through the second set victory. The first run came at 8-3 where Sinkova earned a kill, Eremeeva picked up two aces, and Ester Pushkarov had a block solo. The second run came at 14-6 with Thalia Iglesias having a service ace, and Varvara Osychenko and Eremeeva picking up kills. The set ended with the last 4-0 run thaat had Alondra Lebron picking up an ace and Valeriya Kozlova having a kill. | Barry 25, NMU 15
  • Set Three - For the third straight set, the Wildcats had the first point. The turning point once again was a big run by the Buccaneers. This time it was a five-point run. Sophomore sensation Eremeeva turns it up a notch in service picking up the kill and then having her turn in service. She picked up two aces in this rotation. Junior, Osychenko led the last big run with three kills in the five-point stretch. Eremeevaa caallede game with the last point. | Barry 25, NMU 16

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Veronika Eremeeva led the attack with a season-high 14 kills and tacked on four aces.
  • Varvara Osychenko leveled out the offense with her first 10-kill match of the year.
  • Sofya Sinkova hit a career-high with eight digs and tied her high of seven kills.
  • Gaia Riedmüller had her second double-digit dig outing of the season with 10. 
  • Ester Pushkarov tied her career-high in her first start of the year with six blocks (five assists, one solo).
  • Thalia Iglesias led the setters with 19 assists, Petra Brkicic was right behind with 11 assists.
  • For the second time in program history, Barry has put together three straight matches with less than 10 attacking errors.
  • This is the third straight match with 11 service aces for the Bucs.
  • Statistically, the Bucs led in all categories: kills (39-33), aces (11-4), blocks (7-1), assists (37-30), and digs (36-34)
