Women's Tennis Wins Regular Season SSC Championship

The Bucs shut down Embry-Riddle in their 6-1 victory to end the regular season

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--  The top-ranked Barry Buccaneers played their final Sunshine State Conference women's tennis game of the regular season against the  #7-ranked Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday morning at the Buccaneer Tennis Center, emerging victorious 6-1, with the only point given up due to retirement.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Barry started strong in doubles, taking two of the three courts. Alina Michalitsch and Dinara Alloiarova dominated on Court #3 with a 6-2 win, followed by Angela Leweurs and Maria Tatarnikova's matching 6-2 performance on Court #2. Embry-Riddle grabbed the win on Court #1, as their #25-ranked pair Hierro and Cuesta Bret defeated Ailen Crespo and Viktoriia Dema 6-2. Despite the loss, Barry secured the doubles point with two early victories.
  • In singles, Maria Tatarnikova opened with a commanding 6-3, 6-1 win on Court #6 over Mariana Cabrera to give Barry early momentum.
  • Alina Michalitsch followed with a clinical 6-3, 6-1 performance over Maissane Aik on Court #2, extending the lead to 3-0.
  • Dinara Alloiarova, ranked No. 63 continued her strong form, downing #21-ranked Jessica Hadipoernomo 6-2, 6-3 on Court #3, which clinched the team match.
  • Ailen Crespo kept the show going on Court #5 with a composed 6-3, 6-2 victory over Kremerskot.
  • On Court #1, Viktoriia Dema wrapped up a tight second set to close out her match against #68 Laura Cuesta Bret, 6-3, 7-6(0).
  • The lone point for Embry-Riddle came from Court #4, where Benedetta Sensi edged out the first set in a tiebreak over Angela Leweurs. Leweurs retired early in the second set due to injury, giving ERAU its only win of the day.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry captured the 2025 SSC regular-season trophy following a 9-0 record in conference play. It is the eighth title for the Buccaneers in the 11 years since the SSC began naming regular-season champions in 2014.
  • Since 2014, Barry has posted a 96-5 record in conference, with eight undefeated seasons.
  • Alloiarova finished the regular season with a team-best 17-0 record in singles and extended her winning streak to 27 matches.
  • With her retirement, Leweurs lost for the first time this year and just her third in her career. Two of her three losses have come against Embry-Riddle.
  • Dema, with her win over Cuesta Bret, improved to 6-0 against ranked foes this spring.

ON THE HORIZON

With the Bucs claiming the top-seed at the SSC Tournament, they earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of the #4 Lynn/#5 Florida Southern match on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 1:00 pm at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic.
