Men's Volleyball Breaks Even in Double Header from HSC

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.  Barry Men's Volleyball splits two matches from the Health and Sports Center on Saturday evening to close out the weekend slate.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Roosevelt):

  • Set One - The Bucs denied the Lakers what they have been doing all weekend, that is winning the first set. Barry went on a 5-1 run to make it 15-11 gathering kills from Colton Beres, Philip Tein, and Ryan Uridel. Uridel also collected a service ace in the run. William Phinizy closed out the set with a kill. Beres led the set with five kills hitting .714 with no attacking errors. | Barry 25, Roosevelt 21
  • Set Two - Both teams traded off the first 12 points hitting a six-all stalemate. After falling behind 8-7 the Bucs stung together five straight points. Phinizy and Beres added kills while Zachary Jabr had two service aces. The Bucs had their most efficient set with 17 kills while hitting .419. Phinizy led the way with seven kills while hitting .500 with just one error. | Barry 25, Roosevelt 23
  • Set Three - Barry fell behind 4-1 in the third set. Then the six straight points gave the Bucs a 7-4 advantage and all the momentum to run a way with the set. Another 5-0 run made it 13-7 with three kills coming from Phinizy. Barry closed it out hitting .379 with 16 kills. | Barry 25, Roosevelt 19

NOTEWORTHY (Roosevelt):

  • This was the most kills in a three set match with 47.
  • Barry hit .366, their highest in a three set, second highest overall.
  • The set one 17 kills ties the most in a set in program history. The 16 in set three comes in at second.
  • Hitting .419 in the second set is the fifth time the Bucs hit .400 or better in a set.
  • William Phinizy had a new career high 15 kills while hitting .480.
  • Colton Beres also notched double digit kills with 10.
  • Zachary Jabr had eight kills hitting .412 with just one attacking error.
  • Ryan Uridel had seven kills hitting .778 knocking down seven of nine chances into a point and not committing an error. 

HOW IT HAPPENED (SJFU):

  • Set One -  The Cardinals came out and scored the first two points. Barry fell behind 4-1 but found themselves leading 8-5 after a five point run. There were three lead changes and eight ties in the set. The block defense came in later in the set but very timely. Elias Fuhrer and Colton Beres picked up a block for the 23rd point that force back to back timeouts from SJFU. Colton Beres picked up his third service ace of the set to end it and give Barry the 1-0 match lead.. | Barry 25, SJFU 23
  • Set Two - Barry scored the first point of the set with a kill from Ryan Uridel. The Bucs pulled away to a 7-5 lead. After multiple ties going back and forth, another kill from Uridel would put Barry up 16-15 and remain at the lead. The Bucs closed the set with three of their last four points coming off the block. Barry totaled nine blocks in the set. | Barry 25, SJFU 19
  • Set Three - The Cardinal were in full control after the 3-3 tie as they ran away with it. The block fell short for Barry as they did not pick up one in the set. The offense had 10 attacking errors that would make a difference hitting .000. | Barry 16, SJFU 25
  • Set Four - The defense picked up where they left off in set two with the first point coming off the triple block of Blake, Uridel, and Jabr. Then the teams traded points with SJFU pulling away at 10-7. It was another runaway set for the Cardinals as they forced a fifth set. | Barry 17, SJFU 25
  • Set Five - The fifth set tie breaker started with Barry picking up another triple block. SJFU scored three straight to make it 5-3 and forced a Buccaneer timeout. Barry tied it up at 11 to continue to have a fighting chance taking advantage of Cardinal errors. SJFU would end up getting the reverse sweep closing it out with a block. | Barry 12, SJFU 15

NOTEWORTHY (SJFU):

  • Barry had double digit kills in four of five sets.
  • The offense hit .155 compared to the Cardinals .262.
  • 32 attacking errors would come back to hurt Barry.
  • The defense set a new program high in block with 16.
  • Phinizy led once again in kills with 14.
  • Uridel's 12 kills was a career high and the first time he sacked up double digits. He nearly missed a double-double with nine blocks, the second most in a game for the freshman.
  • Beres was also in double digits with 11 kills.
  • Blake recorded the first 40+ assist game with 47 for a career high.
