Baseball Rallies To Sweep Twinbill From Cougars

Bucs score late in both games

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers rallied to sweep a doubleheader from the Columbus State Cougars on Saturday at Feinbloom Field, winning 7-3 in the first game and 5-2 in the nightcap.

SUMMARY:
Game 1 - Barry 7, CSU 3

  • B1 -  In the first inning, Anthony Tralongo singled to left center and scored on a base hit by Felix Diaz. | Barry 1, CSU 0
  • T2 - The Cougars knotted the game in the next inning. Bryce Knox doubled and scored on a single by Ian King. | Barry 1, CSU 1
  • T4 - The Cougars took a lead in the fourth. Warrick Wilmot waled to lead off the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. The Cougars bunted him to third and he scored on a base hit by Jackson Chiszek. | CSU 2, Barry 1
  • B4 - Barry quickly regained the upper hand in the bottom of the inning. Nick Toms singled through the left side and Matthew Menendez followed with a base hit down the left field line, sending Toms to third. Menendez stole second and both runners moved up on a wild pitch by Cougar starter Trace Goforth. Jimmy Bruno followed with a single to score Menendez and give the Bucs the lead. | Barry 3, CSU 2
  • B7 - The Bucs broke the game open in the seventh. Bruno and Tralongo walked and worked a double steal. Harry Vargas Seguera pulled a single down the left field line to score both runners. Kendry Noriega walked and stole second and later scored on a ground out. Savi Delgado capped the scoring on a single by Menendez. | Barry 7, CSU 2
  • T8 - The Cougars got one back in the eighth as Know walked and scored on a hit by Wilmot. | Barry 7, CSU 3

Game 2 - Barry 5, CSU 2

  • T2 - Maddox Mueller, who led off with a walk, scored on a single by Landen Jensen. | CSU 1, Barry 0
  • B5 - CSU starter Eric Moore made the run stand up until the fifth inning. Aramis Ramirez, Jr., singled through the right side and, after a bunt, scored on a hit by Branden Delapenha. | Barry 1, CSU 1
  • T6 - The Cougars took back the lead in the sixth as they loaded the bases off reliever Felix Arroyo. But Aiden Denton came in to work oout of the jam, allowing just one run on a sacrifice fly. | CSU 2, Barry 1
  • B6 - Barry tied it back up in the bottom of the inning. Noriega singled up the middle, stole second and third and scored on a sac fly by Diaz. | Barry 2, CSU 2
  • B8 - Noriega started another rally in the eighth. He reached on catcher's interference and went all the way around to third when CSU reliever Bailey Thorne threw the ball away at first on a pick off attempt. Diaz knocked in the run with a single to right and freshman Murchael Turner followed with his first collegiate homer to left center. | Barry 5, CSU 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Billy Eich picked up his first win of the season with six strong innings of work in game one. The big right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and three walks and struck out two.
  • The bullpen combined to throw three innings, allowing one run.
  • Goforth (1-2) took the loss for the Cougars. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings and struck out seven.
  • Denton (1-0), who worked three scoreless innings in relief, earned the win in the nightcap. He allowed two hits and three walks and struck out two.
  • Dalton Williams walked three in the ninth, but kept the Cougars off the board to earn his third save.
  •  Diaz had a big day at the plate for the Bucs, going 5-for-8 with a run and three RBI.
  • Noriega was 2-for-5 with two walks, reached on catcher's interference, stole three bases and scored three runs in the twinbill.
  • Cayden Evans, Jansen, Knox, Cody Eison all had two hits for CSU.
  • The games were the first two in the all-time series with the Cougars.

The series finale is Sunday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 pm at Feinbloom Field.
