Big Hits Were Timely Delivered in Softball SSC Opener Upset Over #22 Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. Barry Softball opened their Sunshine State Conference play against local foe, no. 22 ranked Nova Southeastern. Timely hitting came through for the Buccaneers that delivered the five runs in the upset victory over the the Sharks to open the three game series from Buccaneer Field on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • B3 | The inning started with a leadoff double to right center by Rebecka Mellor. Harper Bunn added another base runner with a six pitch walk. Caroline Figueroa later got hit by a pitch and loaded the bases. Then came the big hit that was long overdue for the Buccaneers, Brooklyn Rushton drove one to deep center and cleared the bases with her triple. | Barry 3, NSU 0
  • B4 | Sofia Chamorro began the inning with an infield single. Paige White then drew the walk to get the first two runner aboard. With two ducks on the pond, Mellor came through with the delivery of a double to centerfield, scoring both runners. | Barry 5, NSU 0
  • T5 | After a strikeout to start the inning, Nova Southeastern strung together two hits and a walk to load the bases. Aubrey Hutzler singled up the middle and drove in a run. | Barry 5, NSU 1
  • T7 | The Sharks threatened a late rally, hitting a solo shot, then to lead it off. The next four batters reached on base as another pitching change was made for the Buccaneers. Samantha Rosenberger, who started the game, came back in and closed it out. She gave up a sacrifice fly and got a ground out to end the game. | Barry 5, NSU 3
NOTEWORTHY
  • Rushton went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. She recorded the first triple for Barry this season. It is also her fifth multi-hit game, which leads the team.
  • Mellor joined the multi-hit club going 2-for-3 with an RBI and scoring twice.
  • Rosenberger threw 4.1 innings to start and 0.2 to close. She allowed just three hits, one earned run, and tied her season high, four strikeouts. She picked up her third win, second against a ranked opponent.
  • This is the fourth upset victory for the Buccaneers this season.
  • Barry has won their last four SSC openers, dating back to 2022.
  • This breaks a six game losing streak to the Sharks.
  • It is the first win at home against the Sharks since 2021.
ON THE HORIZON
The Bucs and Sharks will get right back to it with a double header to close out the SSC opening series from Buccaneer Field, Saturday, February 15. First pitch is set for 1:00pm.
