Men's Lacrosse | 10/14/2025 11:19:00 AM

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— Barry University has hired Alex Williams as its first men's lacrosse coach, vice president Dr. Scott Smith announced today.

Williams brings almost 10 years of NCAA Division II lacrosse experience to The Shores, as the Buccaneers get set to launch their program.

"Alex demonstrated great interest and passion in starting our men's lacrosse program at Barry University," Smith said. "The more time we spent with him, it was evident that he was the right choice to lead our new men's lacrosse program."

Williams comes to Barry after serving one season at Lander University in South Carolina as assistant coach. After the season, he was elevated to associate head coach and offensive coordinator for the Bearcats. Williams was the main architect of the Bearcat offense in 2025, as they finished in the top-ten nationally in assists per game, man-up offense, points per game, scoring offense, and shooting percentage.

"I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to lead the first-ever men's lacrosse program at Barry University," Williams said. "I want to thank Dr. Scott Smith, and the entire athletic administration for their trust and belief in a shared vision to build this program from the ground up. This is an exciting moment not only for Barry University but for the continued growth of lacrosse in South Florida! I look forward to bringing high-character student-athletes who will proudly represent Barry with pride, passion, and a championship mindset."

Williams was part of the conference's coaching staff of the year in 2025 as the Bearcats won the Peach Belt regular season title and reached the tournament championship game. Lander boasted both the conference offensive and defensive player of the year.

Williams came to Lander from Albany, N.Y., where he served as head coach at The College of Saint Rose from July of 2021 until the school's closure in June 2024.  In three seasons, Williams mentored 11 All-NE10 Selections, four All-NE10 Academic All-Conference selections, the 2023 Rookie of the Year. Prior to his time at Saint Rose, Williams also served as an assistant coach at both Frostburg State University for three years and at his alma mater Roberts Wesleyan College for three more.

Williams was a four-year starter for the Redhawk lacrosse team from 2012-15. As a senior, Williams started all 14 contests with 21 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. He started 14 games and scooped up 18 ground balls throughout his junior campaign.

He obtained his bachelor's from Roberts Wesleyan in cross disciplinary studies with a concentration in business administration in 2015 and his master's degree in sports management from Frostburg State in 2021.

The Bucs will begin play in the spring of 2027 as members of the Sunshine State Conference.
