Volleyball Back on Track With Sweep of Panthers

Kozlova leads with 21 kills to win as Barry gets back in win column

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.   The third-ranked Barry University Women's Volleyball team swept Sunshine State Conference opponent, Florida Tech, to improve to 5-1 in league play. Valeriya Kozlova and McKayla Theleus led the way for the Buccaneers on Friday evening from the Health and Sports Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Kozlova picked up where she left off with the first kill of the match to set the early tone. Frankie Good and Kozlova then teamed up for back-to-back blocks to make it a 6-1 advantage Bucs. Barry lost their lead late as FIT came back and made it 20-19. The 22-22 tie was broken by Ivana Žujovic who earned a kill and service ace before Varvara Osychenko ended the set and gave Barry the 1-0 match lead. The Bucs hit .205 with 15 kills, while forcing the Pantherss to a .083 swing percentage getting three blocks. | Barry 25, FIT 23
  • Set Two - The set opened by trading points before Theleus had three straight kills for a 5-2 lead. The Bucs dominated the set hitting .360 with just two attacking errors. Four service aces and three blocks also added to the scoring. The Bucs never trailed in the set and cruised to a 2-0 match lead. | Barry 25, FIT 15
  • Set Three - Another 3-0 set opening for Barry as they looked to close out the match. However the Panthers did creep back into the set and tilted the scoreboard in their favor at 13-12. The score went back and forth for four lead changes and 12 ties. Aafter a 22-22 stalemate, Kozlova came in and closed out the math with two kills out of the last three points. | Barry 25, FIT 22

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Valeriya Kozlova had her sixth straight double-digit kill match, her fourth 20+ kill match.
  • McKayla Theleus remains hot with her third straight double-digit kill match. She had 11 while being a dig short of her third double-double at nine.
  • Gaia Riedmüller continues to hold the back line with 16 digs for a match-high. 
  • Thalia Iglesias predominantly held the setting role with 31 assists for a season-high.
  • Frankie Good had a career-high six blocks on the night leading the way.
  • Statistically, the Bucs led in every category, dominating in blocks 9-3.

The Buccaneers will close out a three-match week taking on the Eagles of Embry-Riddle on Saturday, October 11.
