Volleyball Remains Perfect With a Pair of Wins on Saturday

The Bucs sweep two more opponents to close out the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach

BOCA RATON, Fla. Barry Volleyball stacks up two more wins in a sweep fashion to close out the Hyatt Place Bash at the Beach. The Buccaneers improve to a perfect 6-0 with the victories taken place at split destinations Saturday between Rubin Arena and de Hoernle Center.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - It was an evenly played set as both teams held the lead multiple times. Barry was able to gain space after the 14-14 break courtesy of Diana Akopova getting a kill and service ace in consecutive points. The Bucs did not allow the Cavaliers to put two points together the rest of the way closing out the set with two Akopova kills. | Barry 25, Walsh 20
  • Set Two - Petra Brkicic started off the set with a service ace. Barry rallied multiple points six different times to take the set. | Barry 25, Walsh 17
  • Set Three - Barry had the momentum early thanks to two blocks from Jeyhlen Thomas. Walsh flipped the scoreboard in the middle of the set, climbing to a 15-13 lead. Three different players tallied a kill to swing momentum back to the Buccaneers at 18-16. Barry went on a 7-2 rally to end the match. | Barry 25, Walsh 20

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Defense had held opponents to under 10 kills a set in 14 straight, before allowing double figures in the final set of this match.
  • There were 20 ties and 11 lead changes in the match.
  • Barry had 48 kills, the most this season. Exactly double the amount of kills over Walsh (24).
  • Diana Akopova had a match-high 16 kills, the only player in double figures.
  • Gaia Riedmüller led the back row with 16 digs.
  • Thalia Iglesias and Petra Brkicic continue to split the setter role with 19 and 17 assists, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Akopova broke the 8-8 stalemate with a kill that started a three-point run to take and hold the lead. Cedarville sparked a late comeback that was shut down by a Veronika Eremeeva kill. | Barry 25, Cedarville 22
  • Set Two - Six different players recorded a kill in the set. Eremeeva led the way with five kills. Barry held a steady lead through the whole set. | Barry 25, Cedarville 16
  • Set Three - A tight start had teams exchanging points until Akovova had three-kills in a 4-0 run to make it 14-9. The offense turned it up a notch locking in to score on seven of the last eight points to sweep yet another opponent. | Barry 25, Cedarville 15

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Riedmüller had a season-high 17 digs.
  • Akopova collects her second double-double of the season with a 20 kill, 10 dig performance. She hit the 100 mark with her second to last kill of the match.
  • Cedarville hit .158 for the match as Barry swung .333.
  • Varvara Osychenko is tied for the SSC lead in service aces with 14, picking up three.
  • Petra Brkicic held down the setting duties with 37 assists.
  • Barry has scored the first point in 15 of 18 sets played this year.


ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneer volleyball team will wrap up non-conference action with a trip to Melbourne, Fla. on Friday, September 20 to take on Flagler College from the Clemente Center.
