Men's Soccer | 7/22/2024 9:57:00 AM

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— Ivan Barriga has been promoted to associate head coach on the Barry University men's soccer staff this fall, director of athletics Dr. Scott Smith announced today.

"Ivan has been a huge part of our success," Smith said. "I'm glad that we can recognize his contributions to the program and promote him to associate head coach."

Barriga has been the top assistant coach since 2020, although that season was canceled due to the pandemic. Over the last two seasons, he has helped lead the Bucs to three Sunshine State Conference titles, the regular season championship in 2022 and both the regular season and tournament titles in 2023. The back-to-back regular season championships mark the first time that Barry had won back-to-back and the dual titles in 2023 were the first time Barry had claimed both titles in the same season.

Barriga was part of the staff that was recognized by the conference as the Coaching Staff of the Year both of the last two seasons. In 2022, he help develop Nicolas Villalobos as the SSC Freshman of the Year and in 2023, he saw the Bucs sweep the major awards, winning Offensive Player of the Year (David Polanco), Defensive Player of the Year (Iker Berruezo) and Keeper of the Year (Rafael Furlani).

In his four seasons on staff, including as volunteer assistant in 2019, the Bucs have posted a 38-30-6 mark, 23-14-3 in the SSC. In 2022 and 2023, they went 25-9-5, 15-2-3 in the SSC.

In addition to his coaching with the Bucs, he also worked as the head coach for the Miami Shores SC U17 Girls and the Hollywood Cyclones U8-18 Boys. He led the Cyclones to more than 20 trophies with different age groups in the time with this club.

He played for the Bucs in 2017 and 2018, helping lead them to the National Championship in 2018.

He is a 2019 Barry University graduate with a degree in sport management & business administration.
