Women's Tennis Downs Spartans To Advance To NCAA Quarterfinals

Bucs sweep 4-0 to play in quarters for the seventh straight year

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The No. 1 nationally-ranked, No. 1 seeded Barry Buccaneers defeated No. 42 nationally-ranked, No. 16 seeded St. Thomas Aquinas 4-0 in round of 16 of women's tennis action at the NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival at Sanlando Park on Monday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The doubles point quickly went to the Buccaneers as they won at the top two flights.
  • Dema, ranked #20,  shutdown Kadiri 6-0, 6-3 at the second singles flight.
  • Versier continued to roll over opponents, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Kryuchkova at number six.
  • Michalitsch, ranked #38, closed out the match 6-3, 6-1 over Pavlovets at the top flight.
  • The remaining match remained unfinished, with Barry up a set in all three.   

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

"I think we came in pretty confident, pretty energized and positive," Barry junior Dinara Alloiarova said. "So, I think we played really good."

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry advanced to the national quarterfinals for the seventh straight year and 27th time overall since 1996.
  • Barry has won eight NCAA Division II national championships, tied with Armstrong Atlantic for the most.
  • Barry has won an NCAA-record six straight national titles.
  • It was the first-ever meeting with the Spartans.
  • Versier has now won 33 consecutive singles matches.
  • Versier and Dema are tied with 16 singles wins for most on the team.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs advance to the National quarterfinals against the #8Nebraska-Kearney Antelopes at 4:00 pm on Tuesday.
