Men's Tennis Wins Conference-Record 19th SSC Tournament Title

Bucs capture seventh-straight championship and 15 of the last 17

LAKELAND, Fla. --  The No. 8 nationally-ranked, No. 3 seeded Barry Buccaneers men's tennis defeated No. 1 nationally-ranked, No. 1 seeded Saint Leo 4-1 to win their 19th Sunshine State Conference Tournament championship, breaking the tie they had shared with Rollins for the most in tournament history on Sunday afternoon at the Beerman Family Tennis Complex. It was also their seventh-straight SSC tournament title.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Trhe Buccaneers won at the top doubles flight but Saint Leo claimed the point for the third time this season, by winning at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. 
  • Riedel captured the first singles point for the Bucs after winning in straight-sets at No. 4 singles over Monsour. 
  • David Rieme defeated Bacella at No. 3 singles, to put the Bucs up 2-1. 
  • Caill's opponent retired in the second set at No. 6 singles to give the Bucs a 3-1 lead. 
  • Ferreria clinched the Bucs SSC tournament title at No. 1 singles, by taking down the nation's second-ranked player Soukal for the second time this season. 
  • No. 2 and No. 5 singles went unfinished. 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry now has a total of 25 SSC titles, including 19 tournaments and six regular season.
  • The championship was the first for acting head coach Fred Bonal

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers secured the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with the win. Barry has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 29 times, winning 18 regional championships, seven national championships and finishing second seven times. The regional round is scheduled for Monday-Tuesday, May 13-14 at campus sites.
