Baseball Defeats #1 Tampa 11-1 In Series Opener

Biggest win over Tampa in program history

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers spanked the top-ranked Tampa Spartans 11-1 on Friday night in the opening game of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series at the UT Baseball Field.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - Barry got in the board first in the opening frame when Braden Forchic, who reached on a single, craftily stole home. | Barry 1, Tampa 0
  •  B2 - The Spartans used three straight singles from Brayden Woodburn, JP Gates and Santiago Garavito to even the score. But Barry starter Angel Cespedes (6-2) retired the next three batters, two on strikeouts, to end the threat. | Barry 1, Tampa 1
  • T3 - The wheel came off for Tampa starter Alex Canney (9-2) in the third inning. Freddy Rodriguez singled up the middle and Forchic reached on a bunt single. After Even Wickeri reached on an error trying to bunt them over to load the bases, Kevin Noriega squeezed in Rodriguez from third. Nick Toms Drew an intentional pass to re-load the bases and Felix Diaz shot a single through the right side to score two. Canney threw the ball away trying to pick Diaz, allowing Toms to come around and score. | Barry 5, Tampa 1
  • T4 - The Bucs continues to pile onto Canney in the fourth. Rodriguez doubled down the left field line with one out and scored ahead of a Forchic single. Forchic later scored on another error by Canney. | Barry 7, Tampa 1
  • T6 - The night got no better for the Spartan bullpen. The Bucs staged a two-out rally off reliever Drew Howard. Forchic walked and Wickeri singled. Both scored ahead of a Noriega double. | Barry 9, Tampa 1
  • T7 - Diaz walked, moved ahead on two ground outs and scored on a single by Matthew Menendez, who later scored on a wild pitch. | Barry 11, Tampa 1

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Cespedes turned in a gem in leading the Bucs to the series-opening win. He allowed one run on five hits and three walks and struck out six in seven innings. 
  • Dominic Murgo III closed out the win with two scoreless frames.
  • Canney took the loss for Tampa. he gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks in five innings. 
  • Forchic led the Bucs at the plate, going 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
  • Noriega was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Rodriguez added two hits and two runs.
  • JP Gates was the only Spartan to record multiple hits, including a double.
  • The 10-run win was the biggest for the Buccaneers in the history of the series. They posted 10-1 wins in 1994 and 2011.
  • It was the largest loss for the Spartans since an 18-4 loss to St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Mar. 7, 2011.
  • It was the largest conference loss for Tampa since a 13-3 loss to Saint Leo on Apr. 10, 2009.
