Baseball Clobbers Sailfish To Win Fifth Straight

Dominic Murgo earned his first win as a Buccaneer

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers continued their offensive resurgence with a 15-10 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in non-conference baseball action at Jake Rubin Park on Tuesday night.

SUMMARY:

  • B1 - Ben Green got the Sailfish on the board in the first. He walked and later scored on a fly out. | PBA 1, Barry 0
  • B2 - Trey Miranda knocked in Gracin Cambas, who had reached on an error. | PBA 2, Barry 0
  • T3 - After setting the Bucs down in order in the first two innings, the wheels came off for PBA starter AJ Prendergast (0-2) in the third. After committing an error to put the lead off runner on, he walked Steven Nitch. After a bunt by Jimmy Bruno moved the runners up, Freddy Rodriguez knocked in Nick Toms, then Savi Delgado tied the game with a single to right to score Nitch. Kevin Noriega game Barry the lead 3-2 with a single to right as well. After walking the bases loaded with free passes to Felix Diaz and Braden Forchic, Prendergast gave up a three-run double to Evan Wickeri and was pulled from the game. But the Bucs were not done as Toms singled to drive in Wickeri and stole second. He scored on a single by Bruno, who then worked a double steal with Nitch to score the ninth run of the inning. | Barry 9, PBA 2
  • T5 - In the fifth, with one out, the Bucs put two on with another error by the 'Fish and a hit batter. Toms and Wickeri worked a double steal and both moved up on an error by PBA catcher Sean Williams, allowing Wickeri to score. Toms scored later on a wild pitch. After walks to Bruno and Rodriguez, Delgado singled to left to drive in one run and Sean Shelly blasted a two-run double. | Barry 14, PBA 2
  • B5 - The Sailfish cut two runs off the lead in the bottom of the frame. Pedro Figueroa scored on a ground out after a lead-off double, and Brice Mortillaro hit a solo homer. | Barry 14, PBA 4
  • T7 - Bruno led off with a single and scored on a ground out. | Barry 15, PBA 4
  • B8 - The Sailfish made a last push in the eighth, scoring six times off the Bucs' bullpen. After walking the bases loaded, PBA got on run on a hit batter and another on a wild pitch. After another walk re-loaded the bases Stanton Leuthner singled in a pair of runs and Miranda capped off the inning with another two-run single. | Barry 15, PBA 10

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Dominic Murgo III (1-0) worked three innings in relief of starter Chase Muir, who left after three innings with a 9-2 lead. Murgo allowed two runs on two hits and struck out two.
  • Prendergast took the loss for the Sailfish, allowing seven runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks in 2.2 innings.
  • Delgado, Shelly, Toms and Bruno each had two hits for the Bucs. Toms scored three runs, while Bruno, Nitch, Wickeri, Delgado and Rodriguez each scored twice. Wickeri had three RBI, while Delgado and Shelly had two.
  • Miranda had two hits and three RBI to pace PBA. Figueroa and Leuthner also had two hits.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs open Sunshine State Conference play this week, hosting the Florida Southern Moccasins at Feinbloom Field on Friday and Saturday in a three-game set.
