Men's Soccer Kicks Off 40th Anniversary Season With A Pair Of Home Games

Bucs face Anderson on Thursday and Coker on Saturday

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — Coming off an impressive run in 2022, that saw the Buccaneers reach the NCAA Division II Final Four, Barry University kicks off the 2023 season with a pair of home games against regional foes in Anderson and Coker. The games will be streamed on the Sunshine State Conference Digital Network with live stats provided by StatBroadcast.

The Bucs will take the opportunity to celebrate the 40 years of men's soccer at the Anderson game on Thursday, recognizing some of our alumni and accomplishments. Barry's first soccer coach, Marcus Moran, will be presenting the game ball during the pre-game ceremonies.

Barry went 12-4-4 last season and won the Sunshine State Conference regular season title at 6-1-3. They finished runner up in the SSC Tournament, then beat Wingate 2-1 and advanced past Rollins in penalty kicks to reach the Final Four. 

Barry, who was picked to repeat as the SSC champs, returns 19 lettermen and nine players who started at least half the games, including Third-Team All-American forward David Polanco, First-Team All-Sunshine State Conference defender Iker Berruezo and SSC Freshman of the Year Nicolas Villalobos in the midfield. In all, the Bucs have 77 percent of their goals and 71 percent of their assists back from last year, when they led the league in both categories.

Anderson was tabbed ninth in the South Atlantic Conference poll, with forward Diego Jaramillo, midfielder Lucas Goldberg, and defender Mariano Carpena earning preseason All-SAC honors. The Trojans are coming off a 5-7-3 season in which they went 3-5-3 in conference play, finishing ninth in the standings. Anderson returns 18 players from a year ago, while adding 14 newcomers to the roster.

For Coker, the Cobras were tabbed third in the SAC and had five players named to the All-SAC pre-season team. Midfielders Celestin Blondel and Nikola Sotra made the First-Team, forward Frederic Benedix, defender Matty Tricker and keeper Jasper Rump were named Second-Team. The Cobras were 6-2-10 last season, 5-0-7 in the SAC. The got bounced, by Lincoln Memorial, in the first round of the SAC Tournament 1-0 in double overtime.
