Baseball Splits Doubleheader With Panthers

Barry takes game one, loses finale in extra innings

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader with the Florida Tech Panthers on Saturday at Feinbloom Field, winning the series two games to one.

Game 1
Barry 6, Florida Tech 3

  • T3: The Panthers jumped out in front in game one. Josh Ford ripped a two-run single down the right field line and Gavin McGowan drove in a run with a fly out. | Panthers 3, Buccaneers 0
  • B5: Barry scratched across one run in the fifth. The Bucs loaded the bases on a single by Brandon Sanchez, a double by Steven Nitch and a walk to Jake Ogden. Sanchez scored on a ground out. | Panthers 3, Buccaneers 1
  • B8: The wheels came off for the Panthers in the eighth inning, as Barry sent 11 men to the plate and scored five runs off reliever Ridge Skarbek (2-1). Savi Delgado singled and took second on a wild pitch. Pinch hitter Sean Shelly singled to left to drive in Delgado. Freddy Rodriguez came in to run for Shelly. Braden Forchic punched a single through the left side and both runners stole a base. After a walk to Joe Stella, Kevin Noriega doubled to left center, driving in two runs.   • B1: Barry got one run back on an RBI single from Stella in the bottom of the inning. | Panthers 2, Buccaneers 1
  • T3: Brett Kelly drilled a two-run homer to left. | Panthers 4, Buccaneers 1
  • B3: Forchic smashed his team-leading eighth homer, a solo shot in the Bucs half of the third. | Panthers 4, Buccaneers 2
  • B4: Delgado beat out an infield hit and scored on a single by Evan Wickeri. | Panthers 4, Buccaneers 3
  • B6: Barry stole a lead in the sixth with a two-out rally. Matthew Menendez was hit by a pitch from Panther starter Dylan Cleveland. Wickeri followed with a single. Sanchez drove in Menendez with a single to left to tie the game. With runners at the corners, the Bucs worked a perfect first-and-third play, as Sanchez got in a rundown and Wickeri scampered home with the go-ahead run. | Buccaneers 5, Panthers 4
  • T8: The Bucs coughed up the lead in the eighth. With runners on the corners and one out, Alec Eldridge chopped a ground ball to first, but McGowan beat out the throw at second and Hayden Kimball scored to tie the game. | Buccaneers 5, Panthers 5
  • T10: In the tenth, Kimball led off with a double and Tate Hansen, slapped an RBI single to left. Hansen scored on a double by Eldridge and Eldridge scored when the Bucs muffed a throw on a steal attempt. | Panthers 8, Buccaneers 5

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sebastian Garrido (2-1) worked four scoreless innings in relief in game one. He allowed two hits and three walks, but held the Panthers off the board as the Bucs ralloed for the win.
  • Trevor Baker closed out the game with a perfect ninth for his second save.
  • Skarbek took the loss for Florida Tech. in 2.0 innings, he gave up five runs on seven hits and two walks. He had only allowed five runs all season before today.
  • In the nightcap, Baker took the loss for the Bucs, allowing three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings. He gave up four hits and stuck out four.
  • Christian Galindo (2-2) got the win after stifling the Bucs' bats for one hit and one walk in 2.0 innings. 
  • Forchic led the Bucs' bats with five hits, including a double and a homer. Sanchez also had five hits, and led Barry with three RBI.
  • McGowan and Kelly each had four hits to lead Florida Tech.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts the league-leading Tampa Spartans in a three-game set next weekend in the final home games of the year.
