MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Saturday, April 1, 2023) -- Current and former members of the Barry University men's soccer and women's volleyball programs partnered with Chapman Partnership to share a day of fun field activities and a magic performance with youngsters who are residents with Chapman's homeless assistance centers.
The collaboration, initiated by Buccaneer men's soccer head coach, Petsa Ivanovic, and joined by Buccaneer volleyball head coach, Leonid Yelin, took place at Buccaneer Field on a sunny Saturday morning on the first day of April. Both coaches enjoyed success on the national level with their fall sports, both competing at the NCAA Division II Fall Sports Festival in Seattle, Wash., last December. Miguel Rodriguez, a first-year member of the Bucs' soccer team, mesmerized his fellow teammates and women's volleyball players with his professional-level "magicianship" -- see YouTube video here -- and he had an even more fun-packed presentation on April 1.
"We want Barry University men's soccer team to create positive impact in our community through servant leadership and giving back," says Ivanovic. "We want to lead the creation of meaningful connections between Barry University athletics, our graduates, and all the organizations in South Florida who help support youth development. With formation of BarryCares day, we hope to establish an annual event where we can bring all the youth in our area together to learn, play and engage with our athletes, coaches, alumni, and university staff."
Chapman Partnership manages two Homeless Assistance Centers located in Miami and Homestead. Its residents work together with case managers to create a comprehensive personalized plan, guiding them throughout their journey with Chapman. With fully equipped medical and dental clinics, family dorms, cafeterias, classrooms, Wi-Fi, day-care, basketball courts, and even a dog kennel – Chapman Partnership helps provide all the resources needed for motivated residents to become self-sufficient.
Volunteers are the backbone of our mission at Chapman Partnership. It is easier than ever to schedule time for you (or your group or company) to impact lives of homeless individuals and families in our community. Visit https://chapmanpartnership.org/ to find out more.
