Buccaneer Softball Completes Sweep with Two Shutouts

Lee, Angelico, Barnhart hurl ninth and 10th blankings of the season; Thompson collects three extra-base hits

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (March 4, 2023) -- The Barry University softball team posted a pair of shutouts over Eckerd College, 7-0 and 8-0 (in five innings), to complete a three-game sweep of the Tritons in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action at Buccaneer Field on Saturday afternoon. Cassandra Lee (W, 6-2) and Haelee Angelico combined on the one-hit blanking in the first of two today while Brielle Benefield (L, 2-4) took the loss. In the nightcap, Maci Barnhart (W, 6-3) earned her second win of the series and fifth complete-game shutout of the season while Olivia Johnson (L, 4-2) went the distance for the Tritons.

All-Time Series: Barry now owns a 101-20 mark (.835) in the all-time series. Buccaneers improve to 52-10 on their home field, and avenge a sweep at the hands of the Tritons from 2019.

  • B1: Taylor Thompson reached base with a hit by pitch. Harper Bunn reached on a fielder's choice and Thompson was safe at second on a muffed throw. Cassandra Lee singled to load the bases. Rylee Lord reached on an RBI fielder's choice grounder with Thompson scoring and Lokeinsky getting the force out at third on Bunn with Casanas covering.   • B2: Brooklyn Rushton led off with a walk and stole second. Jordan Ream sacrificed Rushton to third. Becka Mellor lined out to right field for the second out before Mac Stone-Folmar walked on four pitches.   • B4: The Bucs continued their pattern of scoring in each of the first four frames. Jordan Ream singled to right field and Becka Mellor followed with a single to left center. Mac Stone-Folmar reached on a bunt single that scored Ream and advanced Mellor to third with Stone-Folmar stole second. Taylor Thompson's grounder up the middle resulted in two Triton miscues with Mellor and Stone-Folmar both scoring unearned runs. Game Two | Buccaneers 8, Tritons 0 (5 Inn.)

  • B1: Barry brought all nine batters to the plate in the first inning and scored six runs. Taylor Thompson led off with a double to left center. Bunn grounded out to third on a diving stop by Jenice Casanas. Cassandra Lee singled up the middle to put Bucs at the corner bases. Rylee Lord reached on a fielder's choice that scored Thompson and the Lord kept running to steal second and third while Lee swiped home. Hayley Pasma drove in Lord with a single to left field. After a deep fly out by Sofia Chamorro, Brooklyn Rushton singled through the left side to send Pasma to second. Becka Mellor's single to right field drove in Pasma with the fourth Buccaneer run and Rushton moved to third. Becka Mellor stole second and came all the way around to score after a throwing error, with Rushton crossing the plate ahead of her. | Barry 6, Eckerd 0
  • B4: Olivia Johnson retired six straight Bucs until back-to-back walks with two outs in the 3rd. Her only strikeout ended the inning with no damage. Barry built its eight-run lead with two in the 4th as Mac Stone-Folmar singled to center to start the frame. Taylor Thompson doubled to right center, her third extra-base hit of the day, and scored Stone-Folmar. Angel Villanueva pinch ran for Thompson at secondand advanced to third on Harper Bunn's single to first base. Cassandra Lee had a productive out with a grounder to second that scored Villanueva while Bunn advanced to second. | Barry 8, Eckerd 0

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Taylor Thompson had three hits on the day, all for extra bases - one triple, two doubles - and drove in four runs for the Buccaneers.
  • Cassandra Lee, Haelee Angelico, and Maci Barnhart limited the Tritons to just three hits on the day.
  • Lee struck out four in 5.1 innings pitched, hit a batter and walked four.
  • Angelico retired all five batters she faced including two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 7th inning of Game One.
  • Barnhart fanned three in her five innings of work and issued one free pass, that going to the first batter of Game Two, Brenna Lokeinsky.

ON THE HORIZON:
Barry travels to Georgia to play doubleheader with the Nighthawks of No. 2 North Georgia on Monday, March 6 (2 p.m.); the Buccaneers will stop at No. 13 Valdosta State on Tuesday, March 7, for a 4 p.m. single game with the Blazers.
