Baseball Holds Off Tritons In Opener

Bucs win 9-7 on the road

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers held off the Eckrd Tritons 9-7 at teh Turley Athletic Complex in the opener of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series Friday night.

SUMMARY:

  • B1: Dimerson Nunez, who led off with a single, scored on a ground out. | Eckerd 1, Barry 0 
  • T2: Barry took the lead in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Matthew Menendez ripped a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Kevin Noriega and Joe Stella. | Barry 2, Eckerd 1
  • B2: The Tritons knotted the game in the bottom of the inning. Cam Collier led off with a double and later scored on a fly out. | Barry 2, Eckerd 2
  • T3: With two outs, Noriega delivered a double to center field, scoring Christian Maceda and Evan Wickeri to give the Bucs a lead they would not relinquish. | Barry 4, Eckerd 2
  • T4: Barry piled on fou  runs in the fourth. Sean Shelly led off with a single and Menendez smacked a two-run homer. With runners on the corners, Triton starter Joe Stipp (0-2) uncorked a pair of wild pitches, bring in Branden Abreu and Wickeri. | Barry 8, Eckerd 2

  • B7: The  Tritons trimmed a couple runs off the lead in the seventh. Michael Ballard knocked in Joe Wike with a single and Nunez scored on a fly ball. | Barry 9, Eckerd 4
  • B9: The Tritons made the Bucs work for it in the ninth with a two-out rally. With two away, Ballard, who went 5-for-5 in the game, singled to right and Tyler Cox followed with a double to left. Both runners scored on a single by Kyle Abbott. After an infield single by Jake Andriole and a base hit by Collier loaded the bases, Abbott scored when Kyle Ericson was hit by a pitch. But Jake Ogden stepped in to strikeout pinch hitter Joe Muzzio to end the game. | Barry 9, Eckerd 7

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Despite some struggles early, Mike Reagan (3-0) earned his third win, and second conference win, of the season. In 5.1 innings, he allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks and struck out four.
  • Ogden retired the one batter he faced via strikeout to earn his second save.
  • Stipp took the loss for Eckerd, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in 4.0 innings. He gave up eight hits and three walks and struck out five.
  • Wickeri scored three runs and Menendez drove in four to lead the Bucs. 
  • Ballard and Collier combined for eight of the Tritons' 16 hits.
  • Barry is now 2-0 on the road this season, after starting the year 9-4 during a 13-game home stand.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs face Eckerd in a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader tomorrow at the Turley Athletic Complex, starting at 1:00 pm.
