Baseball Opens Season With A Pair Of Regional Wins

Bucs out-score Lane and Tusculum 24-1 in a twinbill

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers started the 2023 season in dominant fashion, winning a pair of regional contests 16-0 over Lane and 8-1 against Tusculum on Friday at Feinbloom Field.

SUMMARY:
Game 1 - Lane

  • B3 - The Bucs got on the board first in the third inning. Jarrett May delivered a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Savi Delgado and Evan Wickeri, who had both singled. | Barry 2, Lane 0
  • B4 - Braden Forchic tacked on a run with a lead-off homer in the fourth. | Barry 3, Lane 0
  • B7 - Barry broke the game open in the seventh, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring seven runs. After walks to Matt Menendez and Evan Wickeri, Joe Stella knocked in one run with a single to right and Wickeri went to second. After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Kevin Noriega walked to load the bases. One out later, Jake Ogden singled to right and Wickeri and Stella both came home, aided by a couple of Dragon errors. Brandon Abreu knocked in a pair with a single to center and Menendez plated another brace with a single to left. | Barry 10, Lane 0
  • B8 - The wheels cotinued to come off for the Dragons in the eighth. Noriega singled and pinch hitter Sean Shelly was hit by a pitch. Brandon Sanchez delivered on run with a single through the left side and Abreu was hit as well to load the bases. Danny Garcia brought in a run with a walk and Delgado hit into a fielder's choice to score Sanchez. Menendez knocked in Abreu and Brady Neel walked to laod the bases. Pinch hitter Jorge Blanco knocked a ball over the wall in left center, but inadvertently passed Neel on the bases. The umpires call both Blanco and Neel out, but Delgado and Menendez scored. | Barry 16, Lane 0

Game 2 - Tusculum

  • T4 - Max Schmarder broke the scoring ice with a solo homer in the fourth. | Tusculum 1, Barry 0
  • B4 - Barry got the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Christian Maceda drew a lead-off walk and Delgado beat out an infield single. With two outs, Wickeri doubled into the left center gap to score Maceda and put runners at second and third. Stella followed with a two-run single and the Bucs took a lead they would not relenquish. | Barry 3, Tusculum 1
  • B5 - Ogden launched a solo homer in the fifth, the first of his career. | Barry 4, Tusculum 1
  • B6  - Delgado walked and stole second. Wickeri knocked him in with a single down the right field line. After a wlk to Stella, Noriega dumped another single down the line to score Wickeri. | Barry 6, Tusculum 1
  • B8 - The Bucs staged a two-out rally in the eighth. Wicker beat out an infield hit and went first-to-third on a single by Stella. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Noriega knocked in Stella to cap the scoring. | Barry 8, Tusculum 1

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The Bucs had a big day at the plate, rapping out 27 hits, including three doubles and two homers, scored 24 runs and drove in 22. 
  • Wickeri and Stella each had four hits, with Wickeri, who also drew three walks, scoring five runs in the twinbill.
  • Stella and Menendez both had three RBI to lead the team, while six players drove in two.
  • The pitching was equally impressive. Angel Cespedes (1-0) worked four scoreless innings in a split game against Lane, allowing two hits and striking out seven. 
  • Federico Zapata (1-0) went 5.1 innings in relief of Mike Reagan in the Tusculum game. He gave up just one hit and struck out four.
  • In all, the Bucs allowed 10 hits and three walks against 20 strike outs in 18.0 innings. 
  • T'Shaun Bridgeforth (0-1) took the loss for Lane. He worked five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks, while striking three.
  • Seth Willis (0-1) was the loser for Tusculum, allowing three runs on six hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out four.
