Men's Soccer Advances To The SSC Tournament Final Over Nova Southeastern

Bucs build a 4-0 lead, then hold on for 4-3 win over the Sharks

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The top-seeded Barry Buccaneers built a 4-0 lead, then withstood a furious three-goal rally by the fifth seed Nova Southeastern Sharks in the semifinals of the 2023 Sunshine State Conference men's soccer tournament at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.

SUMMARY:

  • 12:51 - The Sharks dominated possession early in the game. But in the 13th minute, Michele Villanova put high pressure on NSU keeper Eduardo D'Avino and stole the ball in the box. He flicked it back in front of the empty goal and Oier Calvillo was there to knock it home.  | Barry 1, NSU 0
  • 28:45 - Calvillo fed the ball up on the right side to Peekay Stoffle on an overlap in the 29th minute. Stoffle's cross found the head of David Polanco who got on top of the ball to head it home.  | Barry 2, NSU 0
  • 48:01 - Polanco scored a near identical goal just after halftime, as Calvillo provided the assist.  | Barry 3, NSU 0
  • 51:46 - Stoffle got the ball deep on the right side and sent a long cross up out of the back and across the field to Scott Neil. Neil took the pass, dribbled across the top of the 18-yard box and blasted a shot past D'Avino to the far post. | Barry 4, NSU 0
  • 52:27 - Less than a minute after the Bucs took a 4-0 lead, the Sharks got on the board. Marco Gueli sent in a cross from the left side across to the far post, finding Alessandro Salvadego unmarked for the goal. | Barry 4, NSU 1
  • 55:49 - A few minutes later, Gueli scored one of his own after the Bucs defense failed to clear the ball out of the back. | BArry 4, NSU 2
  • 60:18 - In the 61st minute, the Sharks narrowed the lead to one. Zyan Andrade passed up to Salvadego who drove the ball to just outside the box and beat keeper Rafael Furlani to the near post. | Barry 4, NSU 3

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry out-shot the Sharks 15-10, but NSU held an 8-6 edge on goal.
  • Rafael Furlani had five saves, but conceded a season-high three goals, in getting his 11th win.
  • D'Avino made two save and allowed four goals to take the loss.
  • Polanco scored multiple goals for the third time this year.
  • Cavillo had a foot in three of the Bucs' four goals. It was his second game this season with a goal and two assists. 
  • The game-winner for Neil was his first.
  • The Bucs saw their shutout  streak end at five and Furlani's scoreless streak ended at 552 minutes, second longest in program history to 655 straight by Ron Goguen in 2001-2002.
  • It was the second-straight season that the Bucs dispatched the Sharks in the SSC semifinal. Barry has won four of the last five games in the series.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts the second-seeded Florida Tech Panthers on Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1:00 pm for the championship of the conference tournament. The game is a rematch of last year's championship.
