Strong Start Not Enough For Volleyball Against Florida Tech

Miami Shores, Fla. - On the heels of a commanding victory the night before, the Barry University volleyball team came out on Saturday afternoon and won the opening set against Florida Tech before the visitors won three-straight in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-22) decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set 1 -Trailing late in the first set 18-13, Barry made it a one-point game behind a 4-0 run before responding to a 3-0 spree by Florida Tech with eight-straight points to end the frame.
  • Set 2 - After splitting the opening 22 points of the second set, Florida Tech scored three-straight times following a Barry point to take the lead and used a late 5-0 run to extend their lead to 23-17.
  • Set 3 - Barry overcame an early 7-1 deficit and took the lead midway through the third set at 15-13. Florida Tech reclaimed the advantage off a 4-0 run that made it 18-16, forcing set point at 24-22 before a 3-0 Barry rally gave the Bucs set point at 25-24. Barry served for the set again at 26-25 while Florida Tech had two more set points.
  • Set 4 - Florida Tech used an early 4-0 run to flip the two-point advantage at 6-4 and led for the rest of the fourth set, using a 3-0 run following a 4-0 Barry rally to force match point at 24-20.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Diana Akopova led all players with 24 kills, adding 13 digs, two solo blocks, two assisted blocks and one service ace.
  • Varvara Osychenko anchored the defense behind a personal-best 26 digs on top of 17 kills.
  • Thalia Iglesias dished out 25 assists with 10 digs.
  • Jeyhlen Thomas finished with three assisted blocks and eight kills.
  • Sarah Willey chipped in 17 digs.
  • Both teams recorded 86 digs, while Florida Tech held an 11-10 advantage in blocks and 6-2 in service aces.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers venture to Embry-Riddle on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 4 p.m. contest.
