Men's Basketball Edged By Nationally-Ranked Alabama-Huntsville

Miami Shores, Fla.- Hosting a season-opening South Region Crossover for the first time in program history, the Barry University men's basketball team kicked off the 2023-24 campaign on Friday evening with a back-and-forth clash with Alabama-Huntsville that featured eight lead changes over the final 13 minutes and neither side leading by more than four during the final 10 minutes of an 85-83 setback to the nationally-ranked Chargers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After splitting the opening 24 points of the first half, UAH scored five-straight to take a 17-12 advantage with 13:42 remaining in the opening half.
  • Barry rallied to get make it a one-possession game at 19-16, overcoming an eight-point deficit at 31-23 behind a 10-3 run to make it a one-point game only for a 10-5 stretch by Chargers creating a 44-38 score with 1:37 left in the half.
  • The two sides traded the final eight points of the half to make it 48-42 at the break.
  • Barry kicked off the second half with back-to-back baskets, knotting the score at 58-all before taking the lead at 63-62 with 13:05 left to play.
  • UAH flipped the one-point lead on their ensuing possession before a 6-0 Barry run created a 69-64 advantage with 10:26 remaining.
  • The Chargers reclaimed the lead off a 6-0 run of their own, with Barry pushing the lead back up to four at 79-75 before a 6-2 stretch by UAH evened the score at 81-81 with 3:42 left to play.
  • Barry broke the stalemate with a layup, but UAH scored the final four points of the contest.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Malik Stanley started the year with a 23-point showing, shooting 8-11 from the field and 7-8 from distance.
  • James Montgomery recorded double-digit rebounds in the season opener for the third-straight season with 15, adding 14 points for a double-double.
  • Nick Anderson chipped in 16 points.
  • OT Delancy dished out four assists.

ON THE HORIZON:
Barry closes the 2023-24 South Region Crossover against Montevallo on Saturday, Nov. 11 with tip-off slated for 7:30 pm.
