Season-High Hitting Percentage Caps Undefeated Weekend For Volleyball

Orlando, Fla. - For the third time in program history, the Barry University volleyball team left the South Region Crossover undefeated following a pair of 3-0 victories on Saturday against West Alabama (25-11, 25-17, 25-11) and Shorter (29-27, 25-15, 25-22).

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1):

  • Set 1 - Barry responded to West Alabama's match-opening point with back-to-back scores, holding the Tigers to a -0.057 hitting percentage in the opening set to hold on to the lead for the duration of the frame.
  • Set 2 - After swapping the lead seven times over the opening 20 points of the second set and West Alabama leading 11-9, the Buccaneers used an 8-0 run to pull ahead 17-11 and extended their lead to as many as 10 at 24-14.
  • Set 3 - The Buccaneers scored 16-straight points after splitting the initial 16 points of the third set to take match point at 24-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):

  • Set 1 - Trailing 15-13 midway through the opening set, Barry used a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the frame at 20-15 only for a 4-0 response making it 20-19. Shorter knotted the score at 22-all, fending off set point at 24-23 and 25-24 and forcing set point at 26-25 and 26-26 before a 3-0 Barry run ended the stanza.
  • Set 2 - After trading 2-0 runs to start the second set, Barry used an 8-1 stretch to boast a 10-3 lead while hitting .600 for the frame to maintain the advantage for the duration of the game.
  • Set 3 - The Buccaneers kicked off the third set with back-to-back points and never trailed during the frame, responding to a late Shorter rally that knotted the score for the first time in the game at 20-20 with a 4-1 stretch to force match point at 24-21.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1):

  • Jeyhlen Thomas recorded six kills on a .714 clip with three assisted blocks.
  • Varvara Osychenko paced the offense behind eight kills while adding seven digs, two assisted blocks, one solo block and one service ace.
  • Diana Akopova added six kills with six digs, four service aces, one solo block and one assisted block.
  • Fiona Baker dished out 28 assists on top of six digs and three service aces.
  • Ivana Zujovic chipped in five kills on a .714 percentage with two assisted blocks and one solo block.
  • Ana Perez tallied 15 digs.
  • The Bucs served 10 aces versus seven for West Alabama.
  • Barry held a 8-1 advantage in blocks.

NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2):

  • Akopove boasted 28 kills on a .565 clip with 10 digs, three service aces, a solo block and block assisted.
  • Osychenko chipped in 14 kills with seven digs, an assisted block and service ace.
  • Thoams added nine kills on a .900 hitting percentage with one assisted block.
  • Baker dished out 44 assists on top of six digs.
  • Zujovic added a pair of assisted blocks with a solo block.
  • Barry's .470 hitting percentage in the match is a season-high.
  • Barry held a 5-2 advantage in blocks.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers return to Sunshine State Conference play on Friday, Oct. 27 at Florida Southern with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
