Volleyball Beats Embry-Riddle, Goes 2-0 On The Weekend

Bucs improve to 11-0 overall, 4-0 in SSC play

Daytona Beach Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers defeated Embry-Riddle in straight sets (25-20) (25-22) (25-19) on Saturday afternoon at the ICI Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Bucs go 2-0 on the weekend and improve to 11-0 overall, and 4-0 in SSC play.

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | The Bucs got out to an early 7-3 lead. Barry then scored four in a row to extend the lead to 11-3 behind two kills from Djuly Schmorantz and a kill from Tyanna Butler. The Bucs kept the lead for the rest of the set. The eight attack errors on the Eagles were the difference in the set. | Barry 25, Embry-Riddle 20
  • 2nd set | The Eagles were up early in the set at 10-8. The Bucs then responded by going on a 4-0 run to go up 14-10. The run was led by two blocks from Jeyhlen Thomas. The Bucs then went on another 4-0 run to go up 19-13. The Eagles came climbing back, to make the score 22-21. The Bucs stopped the Eagles momentum behind kills from Diana Akopova and Jeyhlen Thomas to win the tightly contested set. | Barry 25, Embry-Riddle 22
  • 3rd set | The Bucs went down 7-2 early on. However, the Bucs fought back to make it 10-8. Barry then went on a 7-1 run to go up 15-11. The Bucs then rolled off of that momentum to secure the match win. | Barry 25, Embry-Riddle19
NOTEWORTHY:
  • Akopova totaled 19 kills on 41 swings and Mariana Bertrán totaled nine kills on 18 attempts. 
  • Borcic totaled 30 assist, which led to a team hitting percentage of .268.
  • Biancaliz Cruz totaled two service aces.
  • Schmorantz totaled 12 digs, Borcic and Luana Bulara both had 11.
  • Defensively, Butler led with three blocks. Akopova and Thomas both had two.


ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs return home to play in conference foe Lynn at the Health & Sports Center on Tuesday, Sept. 20. First serve is set for 7:00.
