Baseball Loses Game One To Top-Ranked Spartans

Tampa scored in the bottom of the ninth

TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers lost the opener of their Sunshine State Conference baseball series to the top-ranked Tampa Spartans 3-2 at the UT Baseball Field on Thursday.

SUMMARY:
Game 1

  • T2: Kevin Noriega led of with a double and later scored on a wild pitch by Spartan starter Haden Erbe.  | Barry 1, Tampa 0
  • T3: Branden Abreu singled with one out and Omar Baldo moved him to second with a base hit through the left side. Ihosvany Castaneda dumped a single down the left field line to score Abreu. | Barry 2, Tampa 0
  • B3: Drew Ehrhard belted a solo homer to left with two outs to cut the lead to one. | Barry 2, Tampa 1
  • B6: Tampa tied it in the sixth. EJ Cumbo walked with one out and Dan Sullivan followed with a single to right. One out later, Giovany Lorenzo singled to left to knot the game. | Barry 2, Tampa 2
  • B9: With two outs in the ninth, Anthony Nunez and josh Rulli walked. Jordan Lala ripped a single to center on a 2-2 count to give the Spartans the walk-off win. | Tampa 3, Barry 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Jake Fishman (2-1) took the loss for the Bucs, allowing the one run on one hit and two walks in 1.2 innings.
  • Barydon Nelson (4-1) worked the final three innings, scoreless, to get the win for Tampa. He allowed just one hit and struck out three.
  • Arrison Perez pitched a fine game against the nation's top-ranked team, but got a no-decision. He held Tampa to two runs on eight hits and two walks in seven innings, striking out two.
  • Noriega led the Bucs at the plate with a two doubles and a runs cored. 
  • Castaneda tacked on two hits of his own and drove in one run.
  • Lala, Lorenzo and Luke Glancy each had two hits for Tampa. 

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs continue the three-game series tomorrow at Tampa with a doubleheader at noon.
