Bucs get back on the winning side with a great defensive effort

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers got back to their winning ways with a 63-40 win over the Rollins Tars on Saturday on Cesar Odio Court.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q -  The Bucs jumped out to a commanding lead early in the first period. Nerea Baena hit back-to-back layups to give Barry a 10-3 lead with 6:08 left in the period. The Teams then traded baskets the rest of the frame.  | Bucs 17, Tars 10
  • 2Q -  The Tars hit a couple three-pointers early in the second period to cut the lead to four, but Barry held on to take a five-point into intermission. | Bucs 29, Tars 24
  • 3Q -  The third period proved pivotal. Barry led by five after 1:16 gone in the frame when the Tars went rock cold from the field and Barry rolled off 13 straight points over the next 6:25. A Harriet Swindells layup at the end of the period left the lead at 16. | Bucs 47, Tars 31
  • 4Q - Rollins again opened the period with a pair of triples by Isabella Prada to cut the lead to 10. But Barry again responded by clamping down the defense and holding the Tars scoreless over the next 4:54 as they scored 14 straight. Dasiah Thornton had four points and two steals. After Thornton connected on layup with 0:36 second left, the Bucs led by 25. | Bucs 63, Tars 40

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Thornton, making just her second career start, led the Bucs with 14 points and four steals.
  • Emma Hergot added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebouds.
  • Baena came off the bench with 12 points.
  • Prada led the Tars with nine points, as no player reached double figures.
  • Barry out-scored the Tars 21-7 off turnovers and 15-3 on second-chance points.
