Bucs walk off in the night cap

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University split a Sunshine State Conference baseball doubleheader with the Mocs of Florida Southern Saturday on Feinbloom Field, dropping the first game 10-8 but coming back to take the nightcap 7-6 in walk-off fashion.

SUMMARY:
Game 1

  • T1: Nate Chevalier singled with one out and went to second on a wild pitch by Barry starter Arrison Perez. Duncan Hunter bounced an RBI single up the middle for the game's first run. | FSC 1, Barry 0
  • T2: Grady Maguire plated a run with a little flair to right, scoring Ryan Jenkins who walked and stole second. | FSC 2, Barry 0
  • B3: Ihosvany Castaneda hit a two-run homer, scoring Branden Abreu, who had singled, to tie the game. | Barry 2, FSC 2
  • T5: The Mocs retook the lead in the fifth. Julio Cortez and Jeff Laquori singled to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt, Ahmad Fitts singled to left, socring both runners. | FSC 4, Barry 2
  • B7: Barry went back up in the seventh. After Abreu singled and Castaneda doubled down the left field line, Kevin Noriega tied the game with a single up the middle. Brandon Sanchez drove in Joe Stella with a bases-loaded walk to retake the lead. | Barry 5, FSC 4
  • T8: Connor Berry and Jared DeSantolo each had RBI doubles as the Mocs went back on top. | FSC 6, Barry 5
  • B8: Bran Socorro tied the game in eighth. After being hit by pitch and bunted to second, he took third on a wild pitch by Colin Camarigg (2-2) and scored with Cortez threw the ball away at third. Noriega later hit a two-run homer, driving in Castaneda. | Barry 8, FSC 6
  • T9: The Mocs posted four runs in the ninth. Hunter drove in a pair and Berry and Jenkins each drove in one. | FSC 10, Barry 8

Game 2

  • B1: The Bucs sent 10 men to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs. Barry had six straight hits at one point. Castaneda beat out an infield single and Noriega pulled a hit through the right side. A wild pitch by Mocs' starter Aric McAtee put runners at second and third and Joe Stella brought Castaneda home with a single up the middle. Matthew Menendez followed with a hit-and-run RBI single. Steven Torres stepped up and crushed a three-run homer to left. Socorro had an RBI double, scoring David Vazquez. | Barry 6, FSC 0  
  • T3: The Mocs got on the board with a four-run third. Liquori and Chevalier had back-to-back RBI doubles and two more runs came across on Barry errors. | Barry 6, FSC 4
  • T4: Liquori manufactured a run in the fourth. He beat out an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a fly ball and scored on Hunter's RBI single. | Barry 6, FSC 5
  • T6: It was Liquori again in the sixth, to tie the game for the Mocs. After another infield single, he scored on a base hit by Chevalier. | Barry 6, FSC 6
  • B9: The Bucs rallied for another walk-off win in the ninth. Menendez was plunked by Brien Johnston (0-1) to lead off the inning and Torres drew a walk. After FSC brought in relief ace Ryan Lankford, Sanchez laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, but Lankford threw wild to third allowing pinch runner Elijah Eusebe to score the winning run. | Barry 7, FSC 6

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Derek Cabrera (0-1) was tagged with the loss in game one. He allowed three runs (two earned) on two doubles in a third of an inning.
  • Sebastian Garrido (1-1) went four innings, allowing a run on three hits and one strike out to earn the win in game two.
  • Camarrig (2-2) got the win in game one, despite allowing three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.
  • Johnston took the loss in game two giving up the run after putting two men on via walk and hit by pitch in 0.2 innings. 
  • Castaneda was 6-for-10 in the twinbill, including a double, homer, four runs and two RBI.
  • Noriega was 3-for-8 with a homer and four RBI.
  • Liquori was 3-for-9 and scored five runs out of the lead off slot for the Mocs.
  • The walk-off win was the second this week for the Bucs, after beating PBA 6-5 on Tuesday.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry heads to St. Petersburg, Fla., to take on the Eckerd Tritons in a non-conference series next weekend at the Turley Athletic Complex.
