Baseball Walks Off With Win Over Sailfish

Bucs rally for three runs in the ninth

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers walked off a 6-5 win over the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish in non-conference baseball action at Feinbloom Field on Tuesday night.

  • B4 - Kevin Noriega led off the fourth with a single to left and advanced to second when leftfielder Jiovel Lantigua over-ran the ball. Steven Torres hit a rocket through the right side for an RBI double. | Barry 1, PBA 0
  • T5 - The Sailfish took the lead in the fifth on a hit batter, a walk, two hits and an error. | PBA 3, Barry 1
  • T7 - PBA added two more with the help of a pair of Buccaneer errors. | PBA 5, Barry 1
  • B7 -The Bucs chipped a run off the lead in the seventh. The Bucs loaded the bases with one out and Jose Tabares worked a five-pitch walk to drive in David Vazquez. But the Sailfish regrouped to get the next two outs and hold the lead | PBA 5, Barry 2
  • B8 - The Bucs chipped off another run in the eighth. Steven Torres led off with a single and scored on a wild pitch. | PBA 5, Barry 3
  • B9 - The Sailfish created their own crisis in the ninth, walking Tabares and pinch-hitter Sebastian Garrido and hitting Noriega to load the bases with no outs. Torres, who was on fire all night, smashed a single through the left side, scoring Tabares. Brandon Sanchez, who came on to play second an inning earlier, stepped up to the plate and provided the big knock that had eluded the Bucs all night with a single down the left field line, scoring pinch runners Danny Garcia and Arrison Perez. | Barry 6, PBA 5

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Danny Vazquez (1-0) worked a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one to earn the win for the Bucs.
  • Barry starter Chris Lopez had a scintillating start, facing the minimum over three innings in the split game. He allowed a hit in the second, but got a double play to end the inning. 
  • David Chenoweth (0-1) took the loss for the Sailfish, without recording an out. He hit Noriega to load the bases and then gave up back-to-back singles to Torres and Sanchez.
  • Sanchez came up with the game-winner in his only at-bat, driving in two.
  • Torres went 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while Noriega was 3-for-4 and got the winning run in scoring position when he was hit by Chenoweth.
  • Lantigua had two of the five hits for the Sailfish.
  • Before the ninth inning, the Bucs were just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position, but were 2-for-2 in the ninth. Barry left 11 men on base.

Barry hosts the Florida Southern Moccasins in a Sunshine State Conference series this weekend.
