Men's Basketball Escapes Moccasins

Bucs knock FSC out of the ranks of unbeatens

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University Buccaneers men's basketball team knocked off previously unbeaten and 14th-ranked Florida Southern 86-85 on Cesar Odio Court on Saturday in a taunt back-and-forth game.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - The first half was a nip-and-tuck affair, with five ties and nine lead changes. A three-pointer by Jadin Booth gave Florida Southern their biggest lead of the half of 14-7 at the 17:06 mark. Barry took it's biggest lead at 46-41 on a Tyler Hawkins layup with 2:43 left. But the Mocs scored the last four points of the half to cut the lead to one. The Mocs had three players in double figures, as Booth and E.J. Dambreville each had 12 and Luke Anderson added 11. Nick Anderson led Barry with nine points, but the Bucs out-scored FSC 17-8 off the bench.  | Barry 48, FSC 47
  • 2H - Barry took a five-point lead again with 14:10 left on a triple by Malik Stanley. But the Mocs rolled off a 12-0 run to re-take a seven-point lead, as Donovan Smith scored five points. Barry answered back with a 12-4 run of their own to re-take the lead 74-73 on a pair of free throws by James Montgomery with 6:52. Trailing 79-78 with  4:01 remaining, Anderson hit a clutch jumper in the lane and was fouled. He converted the free throw to put the Bucs up 81-79. After the teams swapped free throws, it was Anderson again with the basket putting Barry up by four, 85-81 with 2:56 to play. The Mocs cut the lead in half on a basket by Tray Alexander and Montgomery hit 1-of-2 from the line to push the lead back to three, 86-83 with 2:14 left. The Mocs got a second-chance bucket from Wes Bongiorni after misses by Dambreville and Alexander with 1:09 to play. The teams combined for three missed shots and a key turnover by Alexander with 0:02 seconds left as Barry held on for the win.  | Barry 86, FSC 85

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Anderson led four Buccaneers in double figures with 19 points.
  • Stanley had 14 points and four assists.
  • Amari Haynes, in his first start of the season, had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
  • OT Delancy chipped in a career-high 10 points.
  • The Mocs' duo of Booth and Dambreville, who came in averaging over 40 points per game, combined for 40, 21 for Dambreville and 10 for Booth.
  • Anderson had 13 and Bongiorni added 10 points.
  • The game featured nine ties and 15 lead changes.
  • The Bucs led on the boards 43-41, including 15-12 on the offensive glass, but the Mocs had a commanding 14-3 lead in second-chance points.
  • The teams each had 30 field goals, including eight three-pointers, but Barry was 18-for-21 from the line, while the Mocs were 17-of-20.
