Men's Basketball Bumped by Bobcats in Closing Seconds

Montgomery's double-double paces the Buccaneers

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University Buccaneers men's basketball team led almost the entire game against St. Thomas University, but the visiting Bobcats (from just down the road) held the last lead as Jordan Hernandez sank the final basket with 3.6 second left to win 83-82. Barry falls to 1-2 overall while St. Thomas wins for the seventh time in eight games this season. James Montgomery took a long pass to the rim from Rusty Moorer for the chance to win for the Buccaneers, but his layup rolled in and out at the buzzer.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Rusty Moorer led the Buccaneers with 11 first-half points in just over seven minutes off the bench. Fred Mulbah led the Bobcats with a dozen points. Barry had 25 rebounds including 11 from the offensive glass. James Montgomery and Nick Anderson both had tip-in layups made. The visitors missed their lone free-throw attempt. The Buccaneers made 7-of-9 from the line with Moorer making all three after getting hacked behind the arc.   • 2H - Jordan Hernandez (14 pts) and Milton Matthews (13 pts) provided the buk of the scoring for St. Thomas who overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half. With OT Delancy's layup at 9:28, Barry led by 12 (69-57). Still an 11-point lead (79-68) at 6:06 following Jaron Williams' step back jumper. Moorer had three more points in the second half, and his jumper at 4:19 was the last Buccaneer bucket, for an 81-72 advantage. Montgomery's free throw at 2:31 was the last point on the board for Barry who still led by four, 82-78. Justyn Rogers made a free throw for the visitors before Matthews had a pul-up jumper to bring the Bobcats within one, 82-81, with 22 seconds left. After a Buccaneer turnover, Hernandez scored the go-ahead basket on a second-chance opportunity for St. Thomas. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry had an eight-rebound advantage in the first half (25-17).
  • With 11 offensive rebounds in the first 20 minutes, the Buccaneers scored one third of their points (13 second-chance points).
  • Double double for James Montgomery (18 points, 15 rebounds).
  • Jaron Williams matched Montgomery's offensive total (18 points) while Rusty Moorer (14 points) and Amari Haynes (10 points) also joined the Buccaneers in double figures.
