TAMPA, Fla. -- The Barry University Buccaneers men's basketball team fell to the University of Tampa Spartans, 72-69, in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) opener for both teams in the Bob Martinez Athletics Center on Sunday afternoon. Barry falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play while Tampa gets its first victory of the season (1-2, 1-0 SSC).

SUMMARY:
- 1H - Tampa had a double-digit lead (26-16) just past the midway point of the half before Barry went on a 14-0 run. Mykah Brown began the scoring with a corner three and assisted on De'Andre Harvey's trey for a 6-0 Spartan start. Harvey's jumper made it 8-0 Tampa before Jaron Williams had a layup for the first Buccaneer points. Nick Anderson followed with a pair of 3-pointers and Rusty Moore gave Barry its first lead with his jumper at 16:02 (11-10). Trailing by 10 (26-16), James Montgomery's free throws kicked off the 14-0 Barry run. OT Delancy chipped in a 3-pointer and two-pointer around a Montgomery layup. Anderson had a steal and pulled up for a triple. Isaiah Washington joined the long-distance brigade with his 3-pointer for a 33-29 Barry advantage. - 2H - The Barry percentages shrunk considerably in the second 20 minutes - 26.3 percent (10-for-38) from the floor, 15.4 percent (2-for-13) from long range. Tampa's percentages dropped slightly as the Spartans outscored the visitors by nine in the second half (37-28). After Jaron Williams' 3-pointer gave Barry its largest lead, seven points at 46-39, the Spartans had their own 14-0 run and were on top by seven (53-46) when Jonathan Bryant II sank his free throws at the 10:06 mark. Montgomery's layup with 90 seconds remaining had the Buccaneers up four (69-65), but Barry would not score another point. Jacob Harris had a 3-pointer and later two free throws to put Tampa up with 10 seconds left. His visit to the charity stripe came at the expense of Montgomery fouling out. NOTEWORTHY:
- Tampa scored seven points in the last 1:04 of the game and shutout Barry after Montgomery's last layup.
- James Montgomery finished with 17 points on 6-of-13 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line.
- Nick Anderson poured in 15 points on 4-of-7 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from threes, and 3-of-4 on free throws.
- With a significant size advantage, Tampa outrebounded Barry, 44-28, although the Buccaneers scrapped for a dozen offensive boards.
- Tyler Hawkins topped the Buccaneers on the glass with five rebounds.
- Tyson Leitao and Yarden Willis both had eight boards for the Spartans.
