Buccaneers pull away after slow start

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University Buccaneers men's basketball team opened its 2022-23 campaign with an 81-65 win against visiting University of Fort Lauderdale at the Health & Sports Center on the Buccaneer campus in Miami Shores, Florida.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H -  The Buccaneers built a 16-point at the break after trailing by as many as seven at the outset. Fort Lauderdale held Barry off the scoreboard for the opening 4:22 minutes of action, scoring three baskets in the stretch to hold a 6-0 lead before a Bucs' free throw made it 6-1 with 15:38 remaining in the half. The hosts knotted the score at 10-10 before scoring 10 more points in their 14-0 run to create a double-digit separation at 20-10 with 8:45 left in the half. Tyler Hawkins (3) and Nick Anderson (2) combined for five treys in the opening 20 minutes. Malik Stanley added a triple.   • 2H -  Trailing by 15 early in the second half, the Eagles' used a 6-0 rally to cut the deficit to single digits at 46-37 with 14:52 left to play. Following a made Barry free throw, UFTL scored 13 of the ensuing 16 points to quickly make it a one-possession game at 53-50 with 11:05 remaining in the contest. NOTEWORTHY:

  • It was the first ever meeting between the two schools in any sport.
  • Rusty Moorer made the only Buccaneer 3-pointer in the second half; Barry finished 7-of-30 (23.3%) from behind the arc.
  • Seven different Buccaneers finished with double-digit points -- Michael Schaefer (10), Nick Anderson (12), Tyler Hawkins (10), Rusty Moorer (11), Jaron Williams (15), Malik Stanley (10), and Amari Haynes (10).
  • Barry converted 23 Eagles' turnovers into 30 points.
  • The teams matched offensive output in the second half (39-39).
  • Barry's biggest lead was 18 points (42-24) after a Malik Stanley fast break layup with 25 second left in the first half.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry travels to University of Tampa next Saturday to open Sunshine State Conference (SSC) play against the Spartans (4 p.m.).
