Women's Basketball Loses To Lions

Lions sink a last-minute three-pointer to edge the Bucs

ST. LEO, Fla. -- The Buccaneer women's basketball team lost their first Sunshine State Conference game of the season 71-68 to the Saint Leo Lions on Sunday in the Bowman Center.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - Barry trailed 8-6 with 6:02 to play in the opening period, but rolled off a 7-0 run. They also scored the last two baskets of the quarter, to take a six-point lead. | Bucs 19, Lions 13
  • 2Q - The second quarter was a wash, with each team scoring 14 points. But the Lions closed to a few as two and Barry led by as many as seven. | Bucs 33, Lions 27
  • 3Q - The Bucs did ok in the third quarter, hitting 50 percent from the field and 33 percent from behind the arc, scoring 18 points. But the Lions knoted the game with 24 points on 62.5 percent shooting. | Bucs 51, Lions 51
  • 4Q - The Bucs and Lions traded baskets for most of the fourth quarter. Barry hit back-to-back thriples from Harriet Swindells and Camilla Flefil to push the leaad back to six, and they maintained it until Alayna Haris back-to-back baskets, taking the lead 68-66 with 1:33 to play. Chiara Fusari knotted the game at 68-68 with a pair of free throws at 1:22. Barry forced a miss by the LIons, but turned the ball over and Tamara Shash, who had not scored in the game until the fourth quarter, drained her third three-pointer of the period to give Saint Leo the lead. Barry's last-second trey was off the mark.  | Lions 71, Bucs 68

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Fusari led the Bucs with 20 points.
  • Swindells added 16 before fouling out with 1:33 remaining.
  • Amanda Ulrich had 20 to lead the Lions, while Alex Button added 14 and Kiki McKintyre had 12.
  • The Lions had 12 turnover to 14 for the Bucs, but out-scored Barry 24-8.
  • Barry out-rebounded the Lions 44-30, including 16-6 on the offensive end, but had just a 12-6 edge in second-chance points.
  • With the result of the game, the Lions, Bucs and Tampa Spartans are all tied for second in the conference.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry is scheduled to host the Eckerd Tritons on Wednesday, Jan. 5.
