Women's Basketball Staves Off Panthers in Three Overtimes

Bucs win in extra frames

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers got back on the court, after having their opponents forfeit the last two games, and dusted off the rust to beat the Florida Tech Panthers 92-89 in triple overtime on Wednesday night on Cesar Odio Court.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q -  The Panthers hit a couple three-pointers and it took the Bucs almost four minutes to get off the schneid. But Barry closed the period on a 13-4 run.  | Bucs 13, Panthers 10
  • 2Q -  Barry extended the lead to 21-12 after a layup by Chiara Fusari with 6:55 left. But the Bucs went cold from the field, hitting just one of their last 14 shots. But the Panthers could not take advantage as Barry went into the break with the lead. | Bucs 24, Panthers 22
  • 3Q -  Barry opened the period with a 12-3 run and closed with an 8-4 run. | Bucs 49, Panthers 38
  • 4Q - Barry jumped out to a 60-48 lead with 3:14 left in the regulation, but went 0-for-3 from the field to end the game, while the Panthers, who had struggled shooting the entire game, hit 7-of-9 including two buckets, a triple and layup by Hannah Roney to send the game to overtime.  | Bucs 67, Panthers 67
  • 1st-OT -  Barry had a chance to win in the first overtime up 76-74, but Fusari missed one of two free throws and Roney hit a driving layup and was fouled to send it to the second overtime. | Bucs 77, Panthers 77
  • 2nd-OT - Harriet Swindells hit two free throws with four seconds left to give Barry an 86-83 lead, but it was Roney again, draining a long three-pointer to force a third overtime. | Bucs 86, Panthers 86
  • 3rd-OT - It was Swindells taking over in the third overtime, scoring all six points for the Bucs, including a pair of free throws with 0:17 seconds left and this time the Panthers could not come up with the answer. | Bucs 92, Panthers 89

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The teams combined to shoot 91 free throws, just six shy of the Division II record of 97 set in 1997 by Glenville State and Davis & Elkins. Barry shot 46, hitting 33, while the Panthers were 29-of-45. Seven players, five for the Panthers, fouled out in the game.
  • Fusari led the Bucs with a career-high 32 points, the most siince Nichel Tampa scored 34 against Union (Tenn.) on Nov. 9, 2019.
  • Swindells scored 13 of her 22 points in the overtimes.
  • Trinity Bosecker scored 12 and had eight rebounds before fouling out in overtime. 
  • Roney had 30 points to lead the Panthers. Aiste Vaitekunaite added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Barry had 23 offensive rebounds and led 15-5 in second-chance points. They also forced 33 turnovers and scored 23 points off of them.
  • The game was the longest in Barry women's basketball history. The Bucs had played double overtime on four occasions, winning three of them, but had never played three overtimes. 
  • The last overtime game was Mar. 3 last year as they beat Saint Leo 80-77 at home. The last multiple overtime game was a double overtime win over Florida Southern on Feb. 15 of last year that Barry won 79-70.
