Women's Basketball Loses To Spartans

Bucs drop out of first-place in the conference

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers lost to the Tampa Spartans 74-56 in the Health & Sports Center on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - The Spartans led the entire game. Kayla Bonilla gave Tampa an 11-point lead with -:40 second left in the first period.  | Spartans 25, Bucs 13
  • 2Q - A jumper by Melijah Sullivan gave the Spartans their biggest lead of the half with nine seconds left.  | Spartans 44, Bucs 28
  • 3Q - Tampa pushed the lead into the 20s with a layup by Aaliyah Abney with 4:57 left in the period. Dasiah Thornton hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the lead to 18. | Spartans 59, Bucs 41
  • 4Q - The Bucs came out with a new fire in the fourth period. They opened the period with a 15-4 run to cut the lead to seven, 63-56, on a triple by Chiara Fusari with 4:07 remaining. But that was as close as the Bucs would get as they missed their final seven shots from the field. | Spartans 74, Bucs 56

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Chiara Fusari led the Bucs with 18 points, but was the only player in double figures.
  • Aaliyah Abney led everyone with 25 points. LaShayla Wright-Ponder added 19.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs are on the road for the next four games, starting at Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday, Jan. 19 in the Greene Center.
