Bucs rally to take down Bearcats

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The second-seeded Barry Buccaneers advanced to the national semifinals with a 4-1 win over the seven seed, Northwest Missouri State, on Tuesday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bearcats took a quick lead in doubles as the #14-ranked tandem of Andrea Zamurri and Franco Oliva won 6-2 over Ignasi Forcano and Martin Gutierrez at number one.
  • Giuliato and Buettner continued their dominant play with a 6-2 win over martin Sanchez and Fillipo Piranomote at number two.
  • But the Bearcats won 7-5 at number three to take the doubles point.
  • In singles, Ibañez Gallego quickly evened the match at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Franco Oliva at number three.
  • Tim Buettner gave Barry the lead at number six singles, 7-5, 6-0 over Agustin Velasco.
  •  Giuliato made a big statement with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Andrea Zamurri, who came in ranked third by the ITA and Ultimate Tennis Rating (UTR).
  • Ignasi Forcano provided the clincher again, as in the regional final, with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Martin Sanchez.
  • The remaining matches went unfinished.

NOTES

  • The Bucs advance to the national semifinals for the 11th time in the last 13 tournaments.
  • Barry faces the number three seed University of Indianapolis, who defeated Bluefield State 4-0 on Tuesday.
  • The Bucs are 2-0 all-time against the Greyhounds.
  • Barry won 7-2 at home in 2017 and prevailed 5-3 in the semifinals of the 2018 national tournament. The Greyhounds swept the doubles in 2018, but Barry took five of the six singles flights to advance to the finals.
