SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The second-seeded Barry Buccaneers advanced to the national championship match with a 4-0 win over the third seed, UIndy, on Wednesday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Barry grabbed the early lead as Ignasi Forcano and Martin Gutierrez defeated Tom Zeuch and Yoann Viel at number one doubles.
  • Arnau Rodriguez and Alejandro Ibañez Gallego swung the point to the Bucs with a 7-5 win at number three doubles over Pedro Franca and Nikolaj Talimaa.
  • In singles,  Giuliato made another huge statement with a dominant 6-1, 6-4 win over 26th-ranked Renato Lima.
  • Alejandro Ortega Palacios made it 3-0 Barry with a 7-6 (2), 6-4 win over Zeuch at number two. 
  •  Ibañez Gallego provided the clincher at number three, beating Viel in a pair of tiebreakers, 7-6(4), 7-6(1).
  • The remaining matches went unfinished.

NOTES

  • The Bucs advance to the national championship match for the 12th time, most among all Division II programs.
  • Barry faces the number one seed Columbus State, who crushed Hawai'i-Hilo 4-0 in the semifinal.
  • The Bucs are 4-2 all-time against the Cougars.
  • Columbus State won the only other matchup in Surprise, 5-4 for the 2018 national championship.
  • Barry has reached the championship match every year the tournament has been held in Surprise, winning in 2013 and 2015 and finishing second in 2018.
