Baseball Splits A Pair With Knights

Bucs win the conference game, but drop non-SSC tilt

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers split a pair of baseball games with the Lynn Knights on Friday at the Lynn Baseball Field. The Bucs won the Sunshine State Conference game 5-3, but dropped the non-conference tilt, which was rescheduled from Apr. 21, 4-2 in seven innings.

GAME ONE:

  • B4 - The Knights got on the board first in game one. After Braden Forchic and Davis Payne singled, Joeseph Encarnacion tripled down the left-field line to score both runners. Encarnacion scored on a single by Peter Avino. | Lynn 3, Barry 0
  • T5 - Lynn starter Misael Castillo carried a no-hitter into the top of the fifth, but saw it busted up by the first batter, Derek Smolenski, who launched a lead-off homer to left. Blake Brito followed with a walk and David Vazquez had a single. With runners at first and second, Steven Torres dropped down a bunt, but Castillo threw the ball away at third and both Brito and Vazquez scored to tie the game. | Barry 3, Lynn 3
  • T9 - The Bucs took the lead in the ninth without benefit of a hit. Smolenski walked and Brito was hit by a pitch. Vazquez also walked to chase reliever Jake Buxbaum. Pinch hitter Omar Baldo drew a pass to force in Smolenski and Brito scored on a fly ball by Andrew Rapoza. | Barry 5, Lynn 3

  • T3 - Joel Alvarez walked, advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by catcher Harrison Engstrom. | Barry 1, Lynn 0
  • T4 - The Bucs loaded the bases on a pair of singles by Richie Sobalvarro and Smolenski and a walk to Vazquez. Jose Tabares pushed Sobalvarro across when he was hit by a pitch from Lynn starter Marvin Guzman. | Barry 2. Lynn 0
  • B4 - Engstrom was hit by pitch and Joseph Rosselli walked to chase starter Anthony Bennetti. After a fielder's choice erased Engstrom at third, the night pushed across four runs to take the lead off releiver Brandon Cabrera. Pedro Martinez and Oscar Benitez, Jr., had RBI singles, one run scored on a squeeze bunt and another on a sacrifice fly. | Lynn 4, Barry 2

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Austin Genao (1-0) worked two scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
  • Ben Terwilliger worked a perfect ninth with one strike out for his fourth save.
  • Buxbaum (0-2) was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs on two walks in a third of an inning.
  • The Knights out-hit the Bucs 8-3 in game one, but Barry issued ust one free pass, while the Knights had seven walks, a hit batter and committed three errors.
  • Cabrera (0-1) took the game two loss for the Bucs. He worked 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks.
  • Philip Quinn (1-0) worked the final 3.1 innings to get the win for the Knights. He allowed a run on four hits, but did not walk a batter and struck out four.
