Baseball Storms Back To Beat the Moccasins

A six-run seventh inning led the Bucs to victory

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers fell behind early but stormed back for a 9-8 win over the Florida Southern Moccasins in the opening game of a Sunshine State Conference baseball series on Thursday night at Feinbloom Field.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - Vaun Brown was hit by Barry starter Frank II Gonzalez to start the game. He stole second and scored on a single by Conner Berry. | FSC 1, Barry 0
  • B1 - Willie Escala walked with one out and stole second. JC Garcia drove in the run with a single to center. | Barry 1, FSC 1
  • T3 - The Mocs broke out in the top of the third. Ahmad Fitts singled to left and Brown reached on an error to third and both runners advanced an extra base. Colin Camarigg lined a shot off Gonzalez's leg to score Fitts. After Berry drove in Brown with a sacrifice fly to left, Chad Schissler launched his first homer of the year to left center. | FSC 5, Barry 1
  • T4 - Fitts again singled, this time to right, and stole second. Brown had a base hit to left to drive him in. | FSC 6, Barry 1
  • B4 - The Bucs got one run back in the bottom of the frame. Steven Torres, who had singled, scored ahead of an Andrew Rapoza back hit. | FSC 6, Barry 2
  • B5 - Ihosvany Casteneda drew a lead off walk and scored when Garcia doubled down the left field line. | FSC 6, Barry 3
  • T6 - Nick Wells hit a leadoff homer | FSC 7, Barry 3
  • T7 - Camarigg reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored on a wild pitch. | FSC 8, Barry 3
  • B7 - The wheels came off for the Mocs in the bottom of the inning, as Barry batted around and scored six runs. Escala singled up the middle and Casteneda followed with one to left. The runners worked a double steal and Escala scampered home when the Mocs' catcher threw the ball away at third. Richie Sobalvarro ripped a double to left center to score Casteneda and Garcia followed with a base hit to bring Sobalvarro home. Garcia moved all the way to third on a failed pick off attempt and scored on a fly out to cut the lead to one. Blake Brito was hit by a pitch and Branden Abreau drew a walk. Rapoza singled sharply to right and Brito was forced to hold at third. Escala stepped up with the big base hit, bringing in Brito and Abreu. | Barry 9, FSC 8

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Anthony Bennetti (1-0) worked three sold innings in relief of Gonzalez and was the recipient of the scoring outburst in the seventh. He allowed one earned run on Wells' homer and struck out three to earn his first collegiate win.
  • Nick Vanderhoef and Ben Terwilliger set the last six Mocs down in a row, with Terwilliger picking up his third save. 
  • Pablo Toranzo (0-1) took the loss after Thomas Spinelli allowed both of his runs to score on Escala's base hit. Toranzo faced five batters, allowing a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. JJ Neikro was tagged for four runs (three earned) in an inning plus of work.
  • Garcia was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead the Bucs at the plate. 
  • Escala went 2-for-3 with a walk, a hit by pitch, two runs and two RBI, including the game-winner.
  • Casteneda and Rapoza each had two hits as well.
  • Fitts and Berry each had two hits for the Mocs.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs visit the Mocs on Saturday, Apr. 24 in a doubleheader to conclude the series.
